Description (EN):

CHAIN REACTIONS addresses the challenge for industrial regions not benefitting from innovation activities from large leading corporations to increase regional capacity to absorb new knowledge and turn it into competitiveness edge and business value. There is a strong need to help SMEs to overcome capacity shortages for innovation and integration into transnational value chains. The project aims at empowering regional ecosystems with the knowledge and tools to help businesses overcome those barriers and generate sustained growth through value chain innovation. CHAIN REACTIONS focuses thereby on modern approaches considering value chains and their complex developments rather than linear technology transfer approaches. The framework of value chain innovation builds on Porter’s 5 forces framework (new entrants, substitutes, customers, suppliers and rivalry) and transversal innovation drivers: key enabling technologies, resource efficiency, digital transformation and service innovation. The focus is on key sectors: advanced manufacturing , ICT and electronics, energy and environment, health and bioeconomy in accordance with their S3 priorities and will:Develop practical instruments (e.g. maturity models) to measure innovation potential and capacity of businesses for the application of the innovation drivers, as wells as instruments enabling to foster and support value chain innovation processes.Set up triple helix Innovation and Growth Alliances and developing their capacity to support value chain innovation through training and practical implementation.Set up value chain observatories to analyse selected industrial sectors and their value chains, and implement the models and instruments developed (pilot).Foster transnational S3 implementation and the emergence of new transnational value chains by creating transnational open spaces for collaboration in the selected industrial sectors.

Achievements (EN):

The partnership successfully developed practical instruments (e.g. maturity models) to measure innovation potentials and capacities; set up triple helix “Innovation and Growth Alliances” and developed their capacity to support value chain innovation; and set up value chain observatories to analyse selected industrial sectors and their value chains. In each specialisation sector, the project partners successfully developed their interesting pilot actions. The project ended with a successful international final conference, which was held online unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. The conference was attended totally by 50 participants, including relevant experts and actors from each represented field. The event also included a very interesting section, a roundtable discussion, which was based on the What are the professions of the future? EU policies for innovation topic. Thankfully, the interactive session was attended by highly-skilled experts, who helped to widen the consortium’s knowledge and contributed with their very interesting and fascinating views for the future in the respected field of the Chain Reactions project.Overall, the partners and experts agreed to continue their contribution and they are hoping for a cooperation in the near future in the key factor sectors of the Chain Reactions project.

Expected Results (EN): R 1.1 Status of linkages among actors of the innovation systems achieved through transnational cooperation in central European regions.

Expected Outputs (EN):

CHAIN REACTIONS contributes to the programme result indicator by delivering the following results: - Implementing triple helix based Innovation and Growth Alliances in each of the target regions (7), which will significantly improve the capacity of regional innovation systems to foster industrial growth through value chain innovation. - Empowering them through trainings with the capacity to deliver first of class support to businesses and further innovation actors (e.g. research, higher education), mainly SMEs, so as to generate growth-oriented innovation processes. - Develop and implement joint models (e.g. maturity indexes) and instruments enabling a deep understanding of industrial value chain dynamics and thorough assessment of innovation opportunities. - Benchmarking the position of the key industrial sectors in the target regions in the key industrial sectors addressed: Advanced manufacturing, ICT and electronics, Energy and environment, bioeconomy… and set up value chain observatories. - Create truly transnational open spaces for collaboration (e.g. value chain based), i.e. generating real transnational complementarities between regions and their smart specialisation technologies and sectors. - Ensure the sustainability of the project outputs beyond the project lifetime. By focussing on the key sectors named, CHAIN REACTIONS contributes to the “bottom-up implementation of RIS3” in the target regions as well as transnational integration of RIS3 implementation.
