Description (EN):

As recognised by the CE Cooperation Strategy, climate change is expected to affect the region considerably in the near future, with a predicted alteration of precipitations leading to hectic variations in the discharge of rivers and negative effects on availability of water resources with potentially increasing users conflicts. Strategic documents in the countries involved in DEEPWATER call for groundwater recharge through MANAGED AQUIFER RECHARGE (MAR) schemes, a viable approach for collecting excess surface water and precipitation in periods characterized with water abundance, and storing it for dry times in underground aquifers. However, at a transnational CE level, implementation of MAR schemes that are successfully applied in other EU regions are yet to be deployed. DEEPWATER-CE aims at developing integrated environmental management capacities of responsible public actors of CE for a comprehensive transnational approach to plan and manage water resources and adoption of MAR schemes as a solution to climate change induced water scarcity. This is done with analysing the CE conditions for applicability of tailored MAR solutions, identify the CE areas of highest need through climatic scenarios and study the MAR feasibility in CE identified pilot sites, building on results of relevant previous FP7 and H2020 projects. After PP5 - State Water Holding 'Polish Waters' official withdrawal 7 Partners from 5 CE countries, relevant APs and decision makers representing competent public and private organisations will improve their capacity to apply a comprehensive approach to water planning and management that encompasses ecological, social, and economic objectives, considering the needs of cross-sectorial stakeholders and target groups that are involved since the project very start, building on existing knowledge and best practices and translating the pilot findings into ready-to-implement policy recommendations on MAR adoption through action plans.

Achievements (EN):

Climate change resulting in more and more extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, is posing a growing problem for the sustainable supply of good quality water to the people. Over the 3 years of the DEEPWATER-CE project, that brought together 7 partners from 5 central European countries (HU, DE, PL, SK and HR), attempts were made to develop a comprehensive and integrated approach in implementing solutions for managed aquifer recharge - MAR. In this way, in times of increased demand, groundwater can be abstracted for human needs. Our team developed a handbook, in which a methodology to help with the selection of MAR facility location is proposed. On the GGIS online platform of IGRAC, the MAR suitability maps resulting from the tested methodology can be explored. During the process of implementing the feasibility study for the pilot sites and selected MAR solutions, the project partners have evaluated them from a variety of aspects. From a broader, long-term perspective, the DEEPWATER-CE results will help to increase our and future generations' security of access to water resources under changing climatic conditions in Central Europe. The DEEPWATER-CE project has significantly contributed to the aim of Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE, which is an integrated, sustainable management of natural heritage. Expected Results (EN): R 3.1 Status of integrated environmental management capacities of the public sector and related entities for the protection and sustainable use of natural heritage and resources achieved through transnational cooperation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

In line with the expected Central Europe Programme 3.1 result indicator DEEPWATER has set a specific result for water resources and contributes to the above with having at the end of project implementation substantially IMPROVED INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT CAPACITIES OF COMPETENT BODIES FOR THE PROTECTION AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF WATER RESOURCES IN CENTRAL EUROPE ACHIEVED THROUGH TRANSNATIONAL COOPERATION. Project result will be achieved through achieving an IMPROVED PREPAREDNESS OF THE CE COMPETENT ORGANISATIONS to apply MAR solutions, by having better knowledge on the technical solutions, legal requirements, but also on social, ecologic and economic impact that their implementation would bring to the targeted territories, thanks to the engaging stakeholders throughout the whole project implementation. Moreover, a HIGHER CAPACITY TO TAILOR, PILOT AND EVALUATE MAR SOLUTIONS TO CENTRAL EUROPE CLIMATIC SCENARIOS AND HYDRO GEOLOGIC SURROUNDINGS is expected to be achieved through strong analysis and identification of CE specificities and cooperation at a transnational level through competent bodies. Finally, A BETTER ENABLING POLICY FRAMEWORK FOR MAR is expected in the countries involved and targeted, WITH THE AIM TO FACILITATE THE LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY OF WATER SUPPLY WITHIN THE CENTRAL EUROPE REGION.
