YOUMOBIL aims at enhancing the passenger transport system for young people living in rural areas and their access to the European and national transport networks. Poor mobility options other than the own car is among the most frequent reasons why young people choose to leave their native rural area and to migrate to larger cities or even beyond, intensifying the demographic change troubling most rural areas in Central Europe. A number of tools including shared mobility and demand-oriented flexible collective transport services have emerged across Europe but only few have been introduced in rural areas of Central Europe. This led to a lack of knowledge among the programme area's transport stakeholders. Moreover, public transport and related infrastructures suffer from a rather poor image among Central European youth. YOUMOBIL partners therefore network with rural areas' local youth in piloting demand-driven novel service features, exploit the potentials of transport management through interfaces for mobile devices, and to explore how youth initiatives can revitalise disused rail infrastructure to enhance the attractiveness and image of public transport. Five technology-driven pilots will demonstrate the use of modern ICT solutions for a smart youth-orientied transport in rural areas while one investment showcases the role of young people to revitalise rail infrastructure. Further investments are prepared by YOUMOBIL. Lessons learnt and knowledge from existing good practices will be shared among transport stakeholders in two summer schools and disseminated in the form of a tool-box that includes details about the financial feasibility of necessary investments complemented by policy recommendations. These outputs address public transport managers from rural areas of CE. Accompanying communication activities include three annual campaigns sending groups of local youth by Interrail to all partner territories and producing daily social media footage.

Achievements (EN):

Limited mobility options are frequently mentioned as a reason why young people choose to leave their native rural area and migrate to larger cities or even beyond. This intensifies demographic change, which troubles many rural areas in central Europe. A number of tools such as shared mobility and demand-oriented flexible collective transport services have emerged across Europe but only few have been introduced in the rural areas of central Europe. The YOUMOBIL project aimed at enhancing the passenger transport system for young people that live in rural areas and at improving their access to the European and national transport networks. The YOUMOBIL partners networked with local youth in rural areas to pilot demand-driven novel service features, to exploit potentials of transport management through interfaces for mobile devices, and to explore how youth initiatives can revitalize disused rail infrastructure to enhance the attractiveness and image of public transport. Five technology-driven pilots demonstrated the use of modern ICT solutions for a smart youth-oriented transport in rural areas. One investment, in addition, showcased the role of young people to revitalize rail infrastructure.

Expected Results (EN): R 4.1 Status of coordinated planning capacities of the public sector and related entitites for regional passengers transport systems linked to national and European transport networks achieved through transnational cooperation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

YOUMOBIL transnational cooperation activities enhance the capacities of public authorities and their transport entities and impact the implementation of six regions' public transport strategies affecting a territory of more than 5 million inhabitants of Central Europe. The provided tool-box presents novel approaches to better link peripheral regions affected by demographic change to national and European passenger transport networks. Focusing on youth as future residents of addressed rural areas, long-term benefits for collective transport in the participating territories are triggered. Through their participation in YOUMOBIL, 8 Central European institutions will apply and test 6 innovative pilot applications, impact 6 improved transport plans, and have the human capacities of at least 30 persons enhanced thanks to transnational capacity building activities. The anticipated improvement of planning capacities for local/regional public passenger transport will be achieved through the introduction of new means of public transport (e.g. ICT-based and flexible approaches), better coordination and information through a real-time localisation of available services, optimised communication of available public transport options, and improved intermodal capacities of secondary and tertiary transport hubs. The learning of YOUMOBIL will feature in a tool-box for a youth-orientied public transport in rural areas and policy recommendations for revitalise disused infrastructures.
