The European Crafts sector is a rich and complex interwoven tapestry combining tradition, heritage, culture, skills and design. Crafts encompasses a wide range of disciplines as a mirror of the diversity of European cultural identity. In economic terms the crafts industry is characterized by small entrepreneurial businesses that provide viable, sustainable business development and employment source. Crafts may be better understood as a distinctive set of knowledges, skills and aptitudes, centered around a process of reflective engagement with the material and digital worlds.The project idea is based on efforts made by the partners for the implementation of policies and projects supporting the competitiveness and the skilling up potentials of SMEs belonging to the crafts sector, in order to innovate it and mitigate the risk of disappearance of many traditional crafts and manufacturing. Crafts is a peculiar productive sector deeply linked with tradition and transmission of "knowledge", and plays a key role as innovator in Europe’s economy and social stability, even if most SMEs are not performing R&D activities as traditionally defined. Their competitiveness depends on their capability to improve processes, products and services. Through CRAFTS CODE, partners have decided to tackle adequately the key issues fostering knowledge about the development of innovation adapted to processes and products for micro and SMEs in the crafts sector. The new technological paradigms make the need to be increasingly present and pressing new and more effective strategies between traditional development models and new frontiers, with a view to market opportunities, requiring more efficient synergies system among the actors involved. The Overall objective is to improve the SMEs competitiveness in the crafts sector by developing a framework stimulating policy learning and capacity building activities and improving the implementation of regional development policies and programmes.

Achievements (EN):

In terms of activities, the project has organised a total of 63 policy learning events. It has also identified 54 good practices, produced 6 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 64 people. In terms of results, the project has succeeded in improving 6 regional development policies for a total amount of funds influenced of EUR 460,790. 00.

Expected Results (EN):

Overall objective is to improve the SMEs competitiveness in crafts sector by developing a framework stimulating policy learning and capacity building activities with the contribution of all involved stakeholders and improving the implementation of regional development policies and programmes, supporting handicrafts SMEs in all stages of their lifecycle to develop and achieve growth and engage in innovation. Crafts is an entrepreneurial sector with unique characteristics: product, company dimensions, cultural/social content. So the sector needs specific policies and tailored actions. The main criticality is represented by the difficulty of the craftsmen in interpreting the dynamics of the markets and adapting in terms of business models, as well as access to finance. Two main sub-objectives have been identified: 1) provide adequate and innovative instruments and increase the level of innovation of the crafts sector. 2) impact on the political and strategic action specially conceived for supporting, protecting, enhancing and promoting the crafts sector as economic and social lever. The project looks at Crafts SMEs as new potential innovative SMEs, which need to find their business strategy and whom the Policy makers need to look at as lever of competitive development. Through an holistic approach, the project intends to investigate general tools and practices to support SMEs and address them to the crafts needs focusing on the ones that can be more relevant/adaptable for this sector. Finally it intends to stimulate the Policy makers to consider needs and specific figures of the crafts sector in their policies and measures. In order to achieve the results, the project will focus on 4 main topics tailored for crafts sector: 1. How to improve innovation applied to business model and process; 2. How to access new markets and targets; 3. How to renovate crafts sector by contamination with innovative approaches and tools. 4. How to support crafts sector by access to finance.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project will strive to bring about a longterm commitment of the PPs and their LSG to provide adequate instruments and increase the level of innovation of the crafts sector, as well as to impact on the political and strategic action specially conceived for supporting, protecting, enhancing and promoting the crafts sector as economic and social lever. The main result expected by the project will be the improvement of policy instruments related to the Structural Funds at regional/national level, as a direct consequence of the policy learning and capacity building process. This process will allow to embed into the ERDF programmes, the GPs exchanged by the PPs and their implementation through the Action Plans in the following policy themes: 1. How to improve innovation applied to business model and process. 2. How to access new markets and targets. 3. How to renovate crafts sector by contamination with innovative approaches and tools. 4. How to support crafts sector by access to finance. These results will be direct consequence of policy learning process and capacity building activities stimulated by the interregional cooperation bringing partners to tackle together common challenges on supporting crafts entrepreneurship, share ideas and experience and develop common solutions. Cooperation will lead to the improvement of implementation of regional development policies and programmes related to ERDF, to be tailored on specific needs and circumstances of each partner region in crafts sector. A closer cooperation with regional stakeholders and the impact of interregional learning on these groups is expected to reinforce the links between regional players involved in building and scaling up the crafts ecosystem.Other expected results will be: a well managed project reaching its objectives, without serious conflict between the partners, without irregularities and with smooth reporting to the programme, an efficient and effective communication and dissemination of the project's activities and achievements to regional and local policy makers through interregional events and innovative information channels. The main outputs of the project will be: 19+ policy learning events organised (4 ITSs, 4+ SVs, 4 matchmaking sessions; 7 Peer Reviews). 300+ Participants at ITS, Matchmaking sessions and SVs. 1 Dissemination workshop. 1 Final Conference (high-level political event). 28+ GPs identified;16+GP selected for transfer. 10 Local stakeholder group meetings per PP (1 for SEM1, 2 for each SEM2-5, 1 for SEM6). 7 RAPs developed. 1 Kick off Meeting. 1 Communication Plan. 1 project web site integrated in the IE website. 1 Brochure (3000 copies). 7+ press releases. 28 videotalks on GPs (7 videos for each ITS topic). 4 GP guides (1 for each ITS topic). 28 storytelling (1 for PP for each topic). 1 project's results storytelling/video. 7 Peer Reviews reports. 1 final publication. 1 Subsidy Contract. 1 Partnership Agreement. 6+1 SGs meetings with Minutes. 6 Progress Reports. 1 Final Report.
