With shrinking populations in many rural areas around the Baltic Sea region, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up public transport and services that depend on mobility, such as home care or home deliveries. The MAMBA project aims to improve the integration of existing mobility structures with innovative transport solutions, such as mobility as a service (MaaS), transport on demand (ToD), and ride sharing applications to overcome these difficulties. MAMBA helps rural regions develop sustainable mobility services: MAMBA stands for Maximised Mobility and Accessibility of Services in Regions Affected by Demographic Change. The project tackles a common challenge among rural communities in the Baltic Sea region that are severely affected by population change and ageing: under-financed public authorities find it increasingly difficult to supply regular public transport solutions for "people-to-service" mobility, as well as "service-to-people" mobility, for example home care for elderly residents. The MAMBA project aims to improve both dimensions of people’s mobility through a number of activities. Establishing Mobility Centres as testbeds for integrated rural mobility: Mobility Centres are being established in ten rural areas in the Baltic Sea region, corresponding to specific mobility needs in each area. Mobility Centres improve the situation by, for example, enhancing transport administration and information systems; creating platforms for public and private actors to coordinate and pool transport services; and initiating new and innovative solutions, such as car-sharing, ride sharing applications, or mobility as a service (MaaS). Evaluating and transferring existing mobility services: MAMBA also evaluates existing, sustainable ways of managing and financing rural mobility that could be transferred to other rural regions. Inspiring examples are presented to public authorities, transport providers and civil society through a public database and a rural mobility compendium. Involving users to improve the design of new solutions: Finally, MAMBA includes users and civil society organisations in the development of sustainable mobility solutions. Seminars and workshops at the local level promote their participation and result in a manual for self-organised mobility. This manual addresses grass-roots initiatives throughout the Baltic Sea region.

Achievements (EN):

The MAMBA project partners have laid foundation for the successful creation of nine mobility centres and implementation of innovative pilot actions in rural areas in Denmark, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Poland and Sweden. Among other things, MAMBA partners contributed to increasing common understanding of what makes a “mobility centre”, thereby setting a joint MAMBA mobility centre standard in terms of functions, aims and general quality requirements. The project partners also prepared various pre-studies to use throughout the project lifetime. For example, a pre-study on the legal framework helps understand why one rural mobility innovation might work in one country while it does not work in another. Another example is a pre-study on economic determinants. This study enables to find out which business model and which financing model works best under which economic conditions.
