The project makes real-time information about ferry delays, cancellations and travel time prognoses available to travel planning systems that cover different modes of transport. Real-time travel information is an immensely dynamic field – and ferry transportation is currently at risk of being left behind. The project sets up a collaborative data hub for real-time ferry information to be used for smoother transport of goods and people in the Baltic Sea region. Maritime key actors need ferry real time information: The Interreg project RTF fosters the utilisation of ferry real time information to optimise intermodal transport chains for goods and people in the Baltic Sea region. To achieve this, key actors from ship navigation, public transport and logistics and ports combine their efforts. A new data-hub to collect, process and deploy ferry real time information: The RTF project sets up a collaborative Baltic Sea region ferry real time data hub. It provides a shared base infrastructure to collect, process and deploy ferry real time info along intermodal door-to-door transport chains across the entire region. A comprehensive toolset to generate all necessary base data for ferry real time information is created. It supplies ferry real time generators with field-tested and validated solutions to feed their data into the hub to connect this process to available systems. In addition to that, proficient market actors create intermodal model applications.They depict different, complementary use cases related to transportation of goods and people and test them as part of their regular services. A broad dialogue among further potential ferry real time generators and consumers, industry partners, multipliers and political stakeholders is set into motion. Benefits for transport actors and millions of passengers: 11 ferry real time demo lines start operating from 2019. The lines cover the prevailing ferry line types of the Baltic Sea region, they involve major ferry operators and demonstrate benefits for 18 million passengers, three million cars, 44,000 busses, and 850,000 trailers in each year. By the end of the project, there is a benefit to be expected for all relevant transport actors to generate and to utilise ferry real time information for optimising intermodal transport chains for both goods and people across the entire region.

Achievements (EN):

Ferries play a significant role in the transport system of the Baltic Sea Region for both goods & pax transport, either necessarily (e.g. to reach islands) or optionally (as sustainable alternative to land transport). In all cases, the interoperability between ferry and land transport is crucial to make ferry transportation competitive. Real time information is an effective tool to optimise intermodal transport chains that include ferry trips. RTF seeks to foster the utilization of ferry real time information in order to optimize intermodal transport chains for goods & people in the Baltic Sea region. The RTF project consortium that is composed of private and public sector institutions from three different domains (ship navigation / public transport / port & logistics) have, jointly elaborated the system architecture for the RTF Platform. This collaborative data sharing hub for ferry real time information, which is ready for being implemented, would be the first to use EU (CEN) standards for EU-wide multimodal travel information services (NeTEx, SIRI and OJP) in accordance with the delegated regulation 2017/1926 supplementing Directive 2010/40/EU. Its implementation, therefore, would mark a new milestone in the field of EU-wide exchange of intermodal transport data. The relevance and attractiveness of the RTF Platform for the industry was thereby ensured by the direct participation of private companies within the partnership into the development process – and it was confirmed by a number of concrete enquiries from outside the consortium to join and utilise the RTF Platform already during the design phase. Unfortunately, the further implementation of the RTF project had to be suspended by 30 Nov 2019. The RTF Platform could, therefore, not be set up and launched in reality for use by ferry operators, public transport providers and port & logistics companies, as it was actually intended by the partnership within the project lifetime, but remained at the concept stage. Expected Results (EN):

RTF will enhance knowledge and capacities of relevant transport actors (e.g. ferry companies, forwarders, public transport providers, bus operators, car satnav providers, port operators, stevedores, etc.) to generate and utilise ferry real time info for optimising of intermodal transport chains for goods and people across the entire BSR. Key actors from three “domains” (ship navigation / public transport / port & logistics) that took separate actions so far combine efforts and pre-work in the following way: - RTF sets up a collaborative BSR ferry real time data hub. It provides a shared base infrastructure to collect, process and deploy ferry real time info along intermodal door-to-door transport chains across the entire region. Compatibility with prevailing data standards and “easy plug-in packages” allow transport actors to use it at attractive & transparent terms. - A comprehensive toolset to generate all necessary base data for ferry real time info is created. It supplies ferry real time generators (e.g. ferry operators, port operators etc.) with field-tested & validated solutions to feed their data into the hub at low costs and efforts, and allow to connect this process to available systems (e.g. port info systems). - Proficient market actors (e.g. DB Schenker) create intermodal model applications. They depict different, complementary use cases related to transportation of goods & people and are tested as part of regular services of the pioneers. Replication blueprints derived from them allow other potential ferry real time consumers to create own applications at lower efforts. - 11 ferry real time demo lines start operating from 2019. They plug-in to the data hub and test the developed generation tools and model applications under real world conditions. The lines cover the prevailing ferry line types of the BSR, involve major ferry operators (e.g. Stena Line) and demonstrate benefits from ferry real time for 18.620.000 passengers, 3.280.000 cars, 44.000 busses, 849.000 trailers in each year. They create, therefore, a powerful nucleus for the further roll out across the BSR. - A broad dialogue among further potential ferry real time generators & consumers (e.g. ferry operators), industry partners (e.g. software developers), multipliers (e.g. related initiatives) and political stakeholders (e.g. EUSBSR PAC) is set into motion. It will step-by-step increase awareness of benefits and create ownership for the topic, and, eventually, unlock further public and private resources for wider ferry real time generation and utilisation in the BSR. To sum up, therefore, RTF will bring the roll out of ferry real time in the BSR a considerable step forward. By its end, it will be easier and cheaper for transport actors to generate and to utilise it for optimising of intermodal transport chains for both goods and people – and a considerable number of end-user in the BSR will already benefit from it on regular ferry trips.
