Description (EN):

1. This project will address the growing need to address the social & economic exclusion of young people in the 18-30 age group with a history of mental illness. A cross border approach is needed because the young people in this target group in the partner regions face common barriers to inclusion including fragmented services insufficently tailored to their needs ( eg community health, housing, family/community support) & a lack of suitable training /support programmes. The cross border approach will also bring together relevant professionals & distinct specialisms of the partners to develop a more comprehensive & integrated response to the target group's needs. 2. The project is highly innovative in that it will develop a holistic & transferable education/training & support programme which will build on the experience /expertise of the R & D Centre Linkoping in Sweden & Zemgale Planning Region in Latvia in developing services to promote the inclusion of this target group. The programme will be flexible , & will include personal action planning, the recruitment & training of mentors, & a toolkit of options including arts/creative activities, sports, excursions, volunteering, vocational 'taster courses & work experience to support individuals in moving closer to the labour market. 3. The project's activities will include mapping the needs/barriers of young people within the 2 regions plus services available/ gaps in provision, establishing regional Stakeholder Forums of professionals, training providers,NGOs & employers, development of mentoring & training/support programmes, piloting these with 20 mentors and 40 young people & evaluating & disseminating the results. 4. The main project results will be; - Sustainable cross border network. - 1 joint training /support programme for young people with mental health problems. - Piloting this with 40 young people. - 140 people participating.

Achievements (EN):

RETHINK improved social inclusion of young people: RETHINK improved social inclusion of young adults aged between 18-30, who had a history of mental illness. The project goals were realised through a holistic and innovative training and support programme which was developed by project partners from the Linköping and Zemgale regions. The basis for the inclusion programme was created by training the mentors for the target group to support them during the RETHINK programme. In Sweden mentors were volunteers, whereas in Latvia they were professionals from the field of social and health care. The content of the training and support programme was designed to enable tailormade solutions and paths based on individual needs of the participant. For example, participants were provided with activities which improved their daily routines, pathways to work and communication skills to help them navigate back to the society. Altogether, around 20 mentors were trained and 40 young people from the target group participated in the RETHINK programme.

Expected Results (EN): R4.1. Communities with improvements

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. The main result achieved will be to reduce the exclusion of 2 groups of young people with mental health problems in 2 regions & a further 3 geographical communities participating in the training programme & to enhance their social & economic integration. 40 young people will be trained & at least 90% will enhance their personal/vocational skills, and / or move closer to the labour market & employment. Participants will be surveyed at the end of the course & at least 90% will confirm that the programme has enhanced their social/economic inclusion. 2. The project will also recruit & train at least 20 mentors/personal coaches, either community, peer group or work based, who will offer ongoing guidance /support to young people on the programme. In addition it will establish Stakeholder Forums in each partner region involving representatives of municipalities, training providers, employers & geographical communities ( particularly communities with high numbers of recent migrants who experience higher rates of mental health problems than the average) targeted through the piloting from where the young people will be recruited. This will mean that at least 140 people will participate in the project as a whole. Participants in thje forums & their activities will be surveyed at the end of the project & at least 90% will confirm that the poroject has improved the social/economic inclusion of paricipating young people 3. These project results will directly contribute to achievement of the project overall objective & the specific objective of the programme & its main results indicator. A key output of the project will be the development of the holistic training/support programme & this will provide the basis for mainstreaming, dissemination & sustainability supporting the social & economic integration of many more young people in the future.
