Description (DE):

URBCON wird den hohen Primärrohstoffverbrauch und die CO2-Emissionen senken, die sich aus der Errichtung und dem Erhalt der gebauten urbanen Umwelt (z.B. Gebäude, Gehwegen, Abwasserleitungen, Brücken) ergeben. Der Schwerpunkt wird auf den Baustoff Beton gelegt. Das Gesamtziel ist es, Nebenprodukte (z.B. metallurgische Schlacken und Verbrennungsaschen) als alternative Ausgangsstoffe in Nord-West-europäischen Regionen anzuwenden, und dies in den Metropolregionen Rotterdam und Gent sowie in einem Bürogebäude zu demonstrieren. Trotz der Nord-West-europäischen Führerschaft hinsichtlich des Baustoffrecyclings ist die hochwertige Nebenproduktverwendung in der Bauindustrie aufgrund des Mangels transregionaler Ansätze eher beschränkt. Durch den Ersatz von Primärrohstoffen durch Nebenprodukte können 84 Mio. Tonnen an mineralischen Baustoffen pro Jahr eingespart werden. Die Hauptziele sind: 1) Entwicklung von Betonen aus 100% Nebenprodukten (Gesteinskörnung) sowie mit Zementen geringer Kohlenstoffbilanz; 2) Vernetzung von Nebenprodukteanbietern und Bauwirtschaft mittels einer web-basierten Vorhersageplattform, zur Prognose der Verfügbarkeit und Berücksichtigung logistischer Versorgungsketten; 3) Erprobung der URBCON-Technologie anhand von 3 originalmaßstäblichen Pilotprojekten; 4) Vorbereitung eines Strategieplans für den Technologietransfer mittels Vorschlägen für politische Rahmenbedingungen, Ökobilanz, Vornormung und Rentabilität für Wirtschaftlichkeitsbetrachtungen entlang der Wertschöpfungskette. Das Konsortium verbindet weltweit anerkanntes Know-how bzgl. Nebenprodukt-basierter Baustoffe, zementärer Ergänzungsmaterialien, alkalisch-aktivierter Bindemittel, Aluminatzemente, der digitalen Rohstoffkartierung, der Ökobilanzierung sowie der Kostenbetrachtung. URBCON wird die Technologie hierzu aufbauen und Umsetzungsbarrieren aus dem Weg räumen, die Infrastruktur mit ökologisch effizienten „high-end“-Betonen in NWE und Europa insgesamt zu errichten und zu erhalten.

URBCON souhaite réduire la consommation de matières premières primaires et les émissions de CO2 issues de la construction et de l’entretien de l’espace urbain bâti (bâtiments, trottoirs, égouts, ponts) en se concentrant sur le béton, le matériau de construction le plus utilisé. L’objectif général est l’utilisation de sous-produits (mâchefer ou résidus de combustion) comme matières premières alternatives pour le béton dans les espaces urbains de la région ENO, comme démontrée dans les aires métropolitaines de Rotterdam et Gand, et dans un immeuble de bureaux circulaire. Malgré le rôle précurseur de la région ENO dans le recyclage et la volonté d’une économie plus circulaire, la valorisation des sous-produits reste limitée à cause d’une approche transrégionale indigente (besoin d’harmonisation législative, disponibilité des sous-produits). Le remplacement des matières premières permettra l’économie de 84 Mt de minéraux industriels par an. Étapes et réalisations du projet: 1) Élaborations de bétons composés jusqu’à 100% d’agrégats de sous-produits et de ciments bas carbone; 2) une plateforme liant les producteurs avec le secteur de la construction, tenant compte des logistiques sous-jacentes à la demande dans ce secteur; 3) 3 pilotes pour tester et valider la technologie URBCON; 4) un plan de transition proposant un cadre législatif, une normalisation, ainsi qu’une analyse du cycle de vie et une validation économique des ciments urbains, agrégats et bétons. Le consortium rassemble une vaste expertise dans l’utilisation de sous-produits comme minéraux de construction, granulats pour ciment, liants activés par alcalis, ciment à haute teneur en alumine, cartographie numérique de ressources et évaluation (économique) du cycle de vie. URBCON mettra en œuvre cette technologie et permettra la suppression des barrières, installant ces nouveaux procédés de construction et d’entretien d’infrastructure à l’aide de béton éco efficace dans l'ENO et Europe.

Description (EN):

URBCON will reduce the high primary raw material consumption and CO2 emissions, that result from the construction and maintenance of the urban built environment (e.g. buildings, pavements, sewer pipes, bridges). The focus is on concrete, being the most used building material. The overall objective is to apply by-products (such as metallurgical slags and combustion ashes) as alternative raw materials for concrete in the urban NWE region, and as demonstrated in metropolitan areas Rotterdam and Ghent, and in a circular office building. Despite NWE’s circular economy drive and leading role in recycling of wastes, the high-end use of by-products in construction remains limited because of a lacking transregional approach (need for critical mass in policy making, wider availability of by-products). By replacing primary raw materials with by-products, 84 million tonnes of construction minerals will be saved per annum. The project steps and main outputs are: 1) to develop concrete mixes with up to 100% by-product aggregates and low carbon footprint cements; 2) to match by-product providers with the construction sector in a web-based platform, forecasting availability and considering the logistical chains underlying the construction demand; 3) to test and demonstrate the URBCON technology in three pilots; 4) to prepare the roll-out of the technology through a transition roadmap, with a proposed policy framework, life cycle assessment, pre-standardisation, and business viability of urban cements, aggregates and concretes. The consortium combines world-leading know-how in by-product based construction minerals, supplementary cementitious materials, alkali-activated binders, high-alumina cement, digital mapping of resources, and life cycle assessment and costing. URBCON will establish the technology and remove implementation barriers, bringing the new capacity to construct and maintain infrastructure with eco-efficient high-end concrete across NWE and Europe.

Expected Outputs (EN): One m³ concrete typically contains 1850 kg aggregates and 350 kg cement. The corresponding production requires 2155 kg raw materials and 146 kg CO2 emission. This means 646 million tonnes raw materials in NWE per year (4 t concrete /year / person).
