Description (EN):

4STEPS project is addressing the main challenge of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) as tool towards a new, digital industrial revolution holding the promise of increased flexibility in manufacturing, mass customisation, increased speed, better quality and improved productivity and its development is supporting the RIS3 in the target regions in the different sectors. SMEs in the target regions are lagging behind in the adoption of innovative tools and solutions proposed by I 4.0 revolution and need to increase transnational collaboration in facing this challenge. Main project objective is support the successful RIS3 implementation applying the I 4.0 to all the industrial sectors identified by each region. The innovative elements of 4STPES will be the methodology applied based on the involvement of all the actors of the quadruple helix, thanks to a bottom up approach. SMEs will be the main target and they will be involved via the CE network of the Digital Innovation Hubs (DIH)– including also the relevant stakeholders of the R&D sector, governance actors, society thanks to an holistic approach. 4STEPS will lead to an improved level of innovative productive methods and application of I 4.0 thanks to a Catalogue development of main possible services offered, a Technology Maturity Level Index development, Transnational Action plan and the creation of the Digital Innovation Hubs, tested during the pilot actions. Within this approach of networking 4STEPS will include also a solution preparing the CE citizen towards the digital future during targeted workshop for digital skills improvement. The project approach developed within the 4STPES project will consider the Industry 4.0 plans applied in CE countries which is are linked to the digitalised production system that will result in a wide range of changes to manufacturing processes, outcomes and business models.

Achievements (EN):

In March 2022, the 4STEPS project came to an end. The main aim of the project was to support the successful RIS3 implementation applying the I4.0 principles and services in different companies and different industrial sectors. One of the main project’s outputs was the development of a I4.0 supporting tool catalogue in which project partners described their services that support the implementation of I4.0 in different industries. Catalogue also serves as a tool that helps to enhance the efficacy of the DIHs services in the region. To increase the efficiency, the transnational cooperation network of DIHs that offer different services and complement each other with solutions was established. The efficacy of the intervention and the added transnational value is ensured by the deep jointly definition of the new services by the partners, based on a quadruple helix approach in the project phases, ensuring the application of the I4.0 in the RIS3 strategies.

Expected Results (EN): R 1.1 Status of linkages among actors of the innovation systems achieved through transnational cooperation in central European regions.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Main project results will be: 1- Catalogue development of main possible services offered linking the SMEs needs and the opportunities of I4.0 (T1); 2-Transnational Action plan including the actions to be applied by the DIH in supporting the SMEs and all the quadruple helix actors; 3-Creation of linkages between the different actors of the regional innovation system and increase of the SMEs innovation potential making SMEs aware about the opportunities offered by Industry 4.0 and about the clear added value of a reinforced transnational cooperation thanks to the TML index (T2); 4- New services supporting development and business, thanks the DIH Transnational Network (T2) and pilot actions involving all the actors of the quadruple helix (T3) increasing the regions competitiveness and closing the gap of SMEs investments towards innovation. In addition : On the business side: it drastically modifies customer expectations, product enhancement, collaborative innovation and organisational forms. New technologies make assets more durable and resilient, while data and analytics change the way they are maintained producing effects also on the R&D sector. On governments: as new technologies increasingly enable citizens to engage with governments, while governments gain more and more tools to increase their control over population. On people: one of the greatest challenges is on big data exploit, on the notion of ownership, consumer patterns and how we devote time to develop skills.
