Description (EN):

The background to this project is the constant release of pharmaceuticals and other micropollutants via wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to the South Baltic Sea (SBS). The rationale is that this hitherto unknown chemical cocktail most likely causes stress to the already threatened ecosystems in the SBS, and that action must be taken to reduce this leakage occurring around the clock. The project aims initially to combine information on upstream pharmaceuticals consumption patterns with estimates of the downstream discharge of pharmaceuticals from a few selected WWTPs located in the coastal regions Skane (Sweden, SE), Mecklenburg (Germany, DE), Klaipeda (Lithuania. LT) and Pomerania (Poland, PL). Additionally an inventory of the status of existing treatment technologies must be made available. This information will be gathered in collaboration with personnel at WWTPs and regional/national authorities, which are the key target groups of the project. The innovativeness is to integrate information on pharmaceutical consumption, existing technologies, release rates and environmental occurrence in regions basically lacking such information. This information is essential to reach the main objective of aiding WWTPs and authorities in a future implementation of the most suitable advanced treatment technology, as EU and its members states are about to make large infrastructure investments in green technologies the coming years. The main outputs are recommendations for actions on how to reduce chemical burden and Roadmaps for investment in advanced treatment technologies at selected regional WWTPs as well as training courses on basic pharmaceutical analysis and advanced treatment technologies for target groups. The expected change is increased knowledge among target groups on pharmaceuticals released to the SBS and improved likelihood of them making wise investments in updating WWTPs in coastal regions the coming decade, thereby improving the water quality of the SBS.

Achievements (EN):

What changed with MORPHEUS? Scientific data and figures about pharmaceutical substances in the Baltic Sea - this is the ground work for all further actions to come. This data has been collected in the MORPHEUS project and will be publicly available for the further use of the data. What did MORPHEUS create? MORPHEUS collected and combined information on the incoming and the outgoing pharmaceutical waste in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This data allowed MORPHEUS to map the quality of the wastewater treatment in the different plants and the left-over pharmaceutical substances flushed into the Baltic Sea. With this data MORPHEUS can not only give recommendations for future investments in wastewater technology, but raises awareness among citizens.

Expected Results (EN): Increased ability of WWTP operators and regional decision-makers to take informed decisions when investing into suitable advanced treatment technologies in order to reduce the pharmaceutical burden on coastal waters in the future.

Expected Outputs (EN):

2) Guidance document on the need of removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater in the coastal regions of the SBS; 2) Roadmaps for uptake of advanced treatment for at least four model site WWTPs located in the SB coastal areas; 3) Training course on chemical analysis and advanced treatment technologies for target group.
