The project focuses on the development of 100% bio-based and non-toxic polyurethane for end products in the textile and synthetic rubber industry. In this way, knowledge institutions and companies from the border region strengthen their leading position in the development and deployment of bio-based materials. The production of biopolymers for commercial applications is increasing year after year. The transition to bio-based materials has also started within the synthetic rubber and textile industry. The textile sector wants to produce at least 20% of its products from biomaterial by 2030. However, biopolymers for textile coatings and synthetic rubber (elastomers), such as polyurethane, are only available for a limited number of applications and are not completely bio-based. For example, polyurethane contains substances that are associated with asthma and other chronic diseases. At the European level, a proposal was therefore adopted to limit the use of such substances. The Bio NIPU project therefore focuses on research into alternative, non-toxic building blocks for polyurethane synthesis. Fully renewable raw materials - such as residual flows from sugar refining and the production of biodiesel and natural oils and fats - are used to develop bio-based polyurethanes. Centexbel, Maastricht University, and Thomas More Kempen will combine their expertise with that of Limburg Urethaan Chemie (LUC) and Stahl International for the development of high-quality bio NIPU with the desired properties. The sustainability of this bio NIPU will be evaluated through life cycle analysis to identify the most suitable composition for large-scale production. This will result in 100% renewable and non-toxic end products for the textile and synthetic rubber industry.

Het project zet in op de ontwikkeling van 100% bio-gebaseerd en niet-toxisch polyurethaan voor eindproducten in de textiel- en synthetisch rubberindustrie. Hiermee versterken kennisinstellingen en bedrijven uit de grensregio hun leidende positie in het ontwikkelen en inzetten van bio-gebaseerde materialen. De productie van biopolymeren voor commerciële toepassingen neemt jaar na jaar toe. Ook binnen de synthetisch rubber- en textielindustrie is de transitie naar bio-gebaseerde materialen ingezet. Zo wil de textielsector haar producten tegen 2030 voor minstens 20% uit biomateriaal vervaardigen. Biopolymeren voor textielcoatings en synthetisch rubber (elastomeren), zoals polyurethaan, zijn echter slechts voor een beperkt aantal toepassingen beschikbaar en niet volledig bio-gebaseerd. Zo bevat polyurethaan stoffen die in verband worden gebracht met astma en andere chronische ziektes. Op Europees niveau werd eerder dan ook een voorstel aangenomen om het gebruik van zulke stoffen te beperken. Het project Bio NIPU zet daarom in op onderzoek naar alternatieve, niet-toxische bouwstenen voor de synthese van polyurethaan. Volledig hernieuwbare grondstoffen – zoals reststromen uit suikerraffinage en de productie van biodiesel en natuurlijke oliën en vetten – worden gebruikt om bio-gebaseerde polyurethanen te ontwikkelen. Centexbel, Universiteit Maastricht, en Thomas More Kempen zullen hun expertise bundelen met die van Limburgse Urethaan Chemie (LUC) en Stahl International voor de ontwikkeling van hoogwaardige bio NIPU met de gewenste eigenschappen. De duurzaamheid van deze bio NIPU zal via levenscyclusanalyse geëvalueerd worden om de meest geschikte samenstelling voor grootschalige productie te identificeren. Dit zal resulteren in 100% hernieuwbare en niet-toxische eindproducten voor de textiel- en synthetisch rubberindustrie.

The production of biopolymers for commercial applications is increasing year after year. The transition to bio-based materials has also been used within the synthetic rubber and textile industry. For example, the textile sector wants to produce at least 20 % of its products from biomaterials by 2030. However, biopolymers for textile coatings and synthetic rubber (elastomers), such as polyurethane, are only available for a limited number of applications and are not fully bio-based. Today, textile coatings and synthetic rubber consist on average of 40 to 60 % bio-based materials. The limited commercial availability of bio-based isocyanates and the difficulties associated with the production of new bio-based isocyanates on a small scale prevent larger values from being obtained. A truly sustainable track for the synthesis of polyurethane requires further research and an innovative approach, without the use of traditional isocyanate and polyol chemistry. The Bio NIPU project therefore focuses on research into alternative, non-toxic building blocks for the synthesis of polyurethane. Fully renewable raw materials – such as residual streams from sugar refining and the production of biodiesel and natural oils and fats – are used to develop bio-based polyurethanes.

De productie van biopolymeren voor commerciële toepassingen neemt jaar na jaar toe. Ook binnen de synthetisch rubber- en textielindustrie is de transitie naar bio-gebaseerde materialen ingezet. Zo wil de textielsector haar producten tegen 2030 voor minstens 20% uit biomateriaal vervaardigen. Biopolymeren voor textielcoatings en synthetisch rubber (elastomeren), zoals polyurethaan, zijn echter slechts voor een beperkt aantal toepassingen beschikbaar en niet volledig bio-gebaseerd. Vandaag bestaan textielcoatings en synthetisch rubber gemiddeld uit 40 à 60% biogebaseerde materialen. De beperkte commerciële beschikbaarheid van biogebaseerde isocyanaten en de moeilijkheden die gepaard gaan met de productie van nieuwe biogebaseerde isocyanaten op kleine schaal, verhinderen dat grotere waarden worden bekomen. Een echte duurzame piste voor de synthese van polyurethaan vereist verder onderzoek en een innovatieve aanpak, zonder gebruik van traditionele isocyanaat- en polyolchemie. Het project Bio NIPU zet daarom in op onderzoek naar alternatieve, niet-toxische bouwstenen voor de synthese van polyurethaan. Volledig hernieuwbare grondstoffen – zoals reststromen uit suikerraffinage en de productie van biodiesel en natuurlijke oliën en vetten – worden gebruikt om bio-gebaseerde polyurethanen te ontwikkelen.
