ETpathfinder gaat om de bouw van een state-of-the-art R&D faciliteit voor interferometrie met flexibele hoogtechnologische laseropstellingen. Hiermee kan verregaand onderzoek worden gedaan naar zwaartekrachtgolven. Om dat onderzoek te kunnen verrichten zijn nieuwe technologieën nodig, zoals het gebruik van sterk gekoelde silicium spiegels met nieuwe coatings, ter vervanging van het gebruikelijke kwartsglas. De vereisten op het gebied van luchtledigheid van het systeem waarin laserlicht zich voortplant en de onderdrukking van trillingen, tasten de grenzen af van wat momenteel technologisch haalbaar is. Bovendien dient alles te worden ondergebracht in een uiterst stofvrije omgeving of ‘cleanroom’. Voor deze technologische innovatie zullen de universiteiten van Maastricht, Eindhoven, Gent, Leuven, Hasselt, en Antwerpen gaan samenwerken met bedrijven. Ook zijn Duitse universiteiten bij het onderzoek betrokken. Door haar unieke karakter zal ETpathfinder verder ook een aantrekkingspool worden voor internationaal onderzoek omtrent hoge-precisie meettechnieken, seismische isolatie, meet-en-regel software, cryogene techniek en (quantum) optica. Met ETpathfinder kunnen noodzakelijke testen worden gedaan die daarna op grote schaal kunnen worden uitgevoerd in de uiteindelijk geplande Europese Einstein-telescoop. Die telescoop zal naar verwachting het komende decennium gebouwd worden. Geologisch gezien en vanwege de aanwezigheid van een aantal toponderzoeksinstituten en hightech industrieën is de regio Nederland-Vlaanderen een kansrijke locatie voor de telescoop.

ETpathfinder involves the construction of a state-of-the-art R&D facility for interferometry with flexible high-tech laser setups. With this, extensive research can be done into gravitational waves. To be able to carry out this research, new technologies are needed, such as the use of highly cooled silicon mirrors with new coatings, to replace the usual quartz glass. The vacuum requirements of the system in which laser light propagates and the suppression of vibrations explore the limits of what is currently technologically feasible. Moreover, everything must be accommodated in an extremely dust-free environment or 'clean room'. The universities of Maastricht, Eindhoven, Ghent, Leuven, Hasselt and Antwerp will collaborate with companies on this technological innovation. German universities are also involved in the research. Because of its unique character, ETpathfinder will also become an attraction for international research on high-precision measurement techniques, seismic insulation, measurement and control software, cryogenic technology and (quantum) optics. With ETpathfinder, necessary tests can be done which can then be carried out on a large scale in the ultimately planned European Einstein telescope. This telescope is expected to be built in the coming decade. Geologically speaking and due to the presence of a number of top research institutes and high-tech industries, the Netherlands-Flanders region is a promising location for the telescope.

Op 8 november 2021 werd ETpathfinder in Maastricht feestelijk geopend door de demissionaire minister van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap van Nederland, Ingrid van Engelshoven.

The requirements in terms of vacuum of the system in which laser light travels and the suppression of vibrations , test the limits of what is currently technologically feasible. Moreover, everything must be housed in an extremely dust-free environment or 'clean room'. For this technological innovation, the universities of Maastricht, Eindhoven, Ghent, Leuven, Brussels, and Antwerp will collaborate with companies. German universities are also involved in the research. Due to its unique character, ETpathfinder will also become an attraction for international research into high-precision measuring techniques, seismic isolation, measurement and control software, cryogenic technology and (quantum) optics. Necessary tests can be carried out in the ETpathfinder facility, which can then be carried out on a large scale in the ultimately planned European Einstein telescope. That telescope is expected to be built in the next decade. Geologically speaking and due to the presence of a number of top research institutes and high-tech industries, the Netherlands-Flanders region is a promising location for the telescope and the EMR region is one of the two potential candidate locations for the Einstein telescope mentioned in the recently submitted ESFRI -roadmap request. On November 8, 2021, ETpathfinder was festively opened in Maastricht by the outgoing Minister of Education, Culture and Science of the Netherlands, Ingrid van Engelshoven.
