In this project, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Eindhoven University of Technology will join forces to create the world's most advanced photonics technology platform. To this end, the universities will connect their unique knowledge and research infrastructure of free form optics (VUB) and integrated photonic chips (TU / e) with each other, coordinate and expand. Photonics is recognized by the European Commission as key technology for the 21st century because it can provide solutions for important societal applications such as ultra-fast internet, smart lighting, efficient solar cells, micro-cameras for medical diagnosis, laser 3D printing and self-driving cars via light-based radar systems. With a view to stimulating regional innovation in photonics applications, the universities will open their joint technology platform to the Flemish and Dutch business community. In addition, the infrastructure will also be used for independent research and collaboration with other knowledge institutions and research centers.

In dit project zullen Vrije Universiteit Brussel en TU Eindhoven de krachten bundelen om samen ‘s werelds meest geavanceerde fotonica technologieplatform te creëren. Hiervoor zullen de universiteiten hun unieke kennis en onderzoeksinfrastructuur van vrije vorm optiek (VUB) en geïntegreerde fotonische chips (TU/e) met elkaar verbinden, op elkaar afstemmen, en uitbreiden. Fotonica wordt door de Europese Commissie erkend als sleuteltechnologie voor de 21ste eeuw, omdat ze oplossingen kan aanreiken voor belangrijke maatschappelijke toepassingen, zoals ultrasnel internet, slimme verlichting, efficiënte zonnecellen, microcamera’s voor medische diagnose, laser 3D-printing en zelfrijdende auto’s via licht-gebaseerde radarsystemen. Met het oog op het stimuleren van regionale innovatie in fotonica-toepassingen zullen de universiteiten hun gezamenlijke technologieplatform openstellen voor het Vlaamse en Nederlandse bedrijfsleven. Daarnaast zal de infrastructuur ook ingezet worden voor onafhankelijk onderzoek en samenwerking met andere kennisinstellingen en onderzoekscentra.

With a view to stimulating regional innovation in photonics applications, the universities are opening their joint technology platform to the Flemish and Dutch business community (including via the eDIH DIGITALIS), as well as to European companies via the pan-European Digital Innovation Hub for photonics PhotonHub Europe . In addition, the infrastructure is also used for independent research and collaboration with other knowledge institutions and research centers.

Fotonica wordt door de Europese Commissie erkend als sleuteltechnologie voor de 21ste eeuw, omdat ze oplossingen kan aanreiken voor belangrijke maatschappelijke toepassingen, zoals ultrasnel internet, slimme verlichting, efficiënte zonnecellen, microcamera's voor medische diagnose, laser 3D-printing en zelfrijdende auto's via licht-gebaseerde radarsystemen. Met het oog op het stimuleren van regionale innovatie in fotonica-toepassingen stellen de universiteiten hun gezamenlijke technologieplalform open voor het Vlaamse en Nederlandse bedrijfsleven (o.a. via de eDIH DIGITALIS), evenals voor Europese bedrijven via de pan-Europese Digital Innovation Hub voor fotonica PhotonHub Europe. Daarnaast wordt de infrastructuur ook ingezet voor onafhankelijk onderzoek en samenwerking met andere kennisinstellingen en onderzoekscentra.
