Neurological diseases are disorders that affect the central nervous system and can impair the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerve or neuromuscular function. Most of diseases are directly related to ageing, being Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and stroke especially relevant due to its incidence and economic burden. More than 7.5 million European citizens aging between 30 and 99 years suffer from different types of dementia. NEUROATLANTIC aims at bringing together the remarkable scientific and technological capacities within the Atlantic Area in the field of the neurological diseases (eg Alzheimer’s Disease, Stroke, etc). This project will act on the clinical, preclinical and capitalization aspects accelerating the uptake of new innovations that will revolutionaze the way in which neurological diseases are handled within the area. NEUROATLANTIC will focus on setting up a transnational platform to develop novel theragnostics agents to treat and early diagnosis of these devastating and prevalent diseases.

O projeto irá focar-se na criação de uma plataforma translacional para desenvolver novos agentes teragnósticos para tratar e diagnosticar precocemente essas doenças devastadoras e prevalentes. O NEUROATLANTIC trabalhará na padronização de protocolos clínicos e inovações pré-clínicas e clínicas.

NEUROATLANTIC tiene como objetivo aglutinar las notables capacidades científicas y tecnológicas dentro del Espacio Atlántico en el campo de las enfermedades neurológicas (por ejemplo, enfermedad de Alzheimer, apoplejía, etc.). El proyecto se centrará en la creación de una plataforma translacional de desarrollo de nuevos agentes teranósticos para diagnosticar y tratar estas enfermedades devastadoras y prevalentes. NEUROATLANTIC trabajará en la estandarización de protocolos clínicos e innovaciones preclínicas y clínicas.

NEUROATLANTIC vise à réunir les remarquables capacités scientifiques et technologiques de l'Espace Atlantique dans le domaine des maladies neurologiques (par example maladie d'Alzheimer, AVC, etc.). Le projet mettra l'accent sur la mise en place d'une plateforme translationnelle pour développer de nouveaux agents de teragnostic pour traiter et diagnostiquer rapidement ces maladies. NEUROATLANTIC travaillera sur la standardisation des protocoles cliniques et les innovations précliniques et cliniques.

Achievements (EN):

Neurological diseases are disorders that affect the central nervous system and can impair the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerve or neuromuscular function. Most of these diseases are directly related to ageing, with Alzheimer’s Disease and stroke being especially relevant due to their incidence and the economic burden they carry. The NEUROATLANTIC project will contribute to address this challenge by proposing new standardised clinical protocols, innovative diagnostic and treatment methods and ensuring technology transfer to enterprises to favour the uptake of innovations in real settings. Specifically, NEUROATLANTIC acts on the clinical and preclinical capabilities in neurological diseases to accelerate the uptake of innovations that are expected to revolutionise how these diseases are handled. The project is exploring the best clinical practices to elaborate a green paper for improved clinical management (diagnosis and treatment) of Alzheimer´s Disease and stroke patients. Moreover, a preclinical translational research platform with all the elements needed (animal models, nanostructures synthesis, assessment of exploitation potential) was set up to bring innovative theragnostic agents and nanobiosensors (to be used to enhance diagnosis and treatment) to real settings. NEUROATLANTIC is also developing a technology roadmap and exploitation plans, defining a governance structure to select new projects to be developed in the platform and developing R&D mission-oriented guidelines to define a strategic agenda to address neurological diseases in the future.

Expected Results (EN):

Expected results: 1) Explore the best clinical practices to elaborate a “green paper” to propose an improved clinical management of neurological patients. 2) Set up a preclinical translational research platform with all the elements needed to bring innovative theragnostic agents and nanobiosensors to real settings. 3) Capitalization of results: technology roadmap and exploitation plans will be delivered for the selected projects; a governance structure will be defined in order to select new projects to be developed in the platform and, finally, R&D mission-oriented guidelines will be developed in order to define a strategic R&D agenda to address neurologica diseases in the future.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• Technology roadmaps, exploitation plans, R&D common agenda based on R&D oriented missions, green paper on clinical management guidelines. Governance structure and methodology of the NEUROATLANTIC platform. • Scientific collaborative publications and several research centres working together in R&D projects on theragnostic agents development. Moreover, number of companies supported to develop new products and services. • Standardrized clinical and biobank protocols. Scientific collaborative publications and several research centres working together in R&D projects on nanobiosensors development. New improved clinical protocols for neurological diseases associated to aging, mainly Alzheimer´s disease and stroke, high prevalente disorders in the Altantic Area.
