The project facilitates the use of zero emission fuels (electric and hydrogen) in the NSR ports and maritime sector. The project looks at the role of ports in the interface between zero emission vessels and port infrastructure. It especially addresses the integration of zero emission fuels into the port refuelling infrastructure and local energy systems as well as port and on-ship energy storage. It will develop refuelling infrastructure for vessels and training for the crews of zero emission vessels and staff using associated infrastructure. The project addresses the shared challenges of emission reduction in ports and the maritime industry. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) wants to reduce maritime sector emissions by 60% by 2050 compared with 2008 levels. Studies suggest that this cannot be reached through the greater LNG use and zero emission fuels must play a key role in emission reduction. This major challenge needs a transnational approach due to the international nature of the industry. The NSR is a world leader in zero emission technology. The project outlines the actions ports must take to support and enable zero emission vessels to operate effectively. It will include practical solutions that ports need to take to service larger scale electric vessels and other harbour users and look at ways in which hydrogen production, bunkering and storage for hydrogen fuel cell vessels should be developed to promote the growth of hydrogen vessels.

Achievements (EN):

The project results can be summarised in three main highlights: Analysing the energy requirements of the e-ferry connecting Ærø and the mainland. The realisation of the first container ship running 100% by hydrogen and the conversion of a second vessel The development of a training station to support the transition to hydrogen ports. Regarding the first highlight, since August 2019, the electric ferry Ellen has operated the route Søby-Fynshav in the South Denmark Region. Passengers' satisfaction is very high due to the smooth, quiet ride and smog-free sundeck. That is not all: Ellen saves CO2 emissions. And in 4-8 years, the extra investment will turn into savings due to low maintenance costs. However, one challenge remains: Charging Ellen with renewable energy. Available local wind energy produced on the island of Ærø needs to match the energy requirements of the ferry through a storage system. Within ZEM Ports NS, the University of Southern Denmark investigated the energy needs of other users in the harbour and on the island. The aim was to develop an intelligent harbour concept. The researchers simulated different scenarios, analysed flexibilities, and suggested incentives to steer the demand in the electric grid. The energy analysis of the e-ferry and its integration with the port was not the only way approached by the project to move towards a greener port concept. The best way to increase the use of zero-emission hydrogen-fuelled vessels is to push the development of these ships/ferries and port-side fuelling and hydrogen storage infrastructure. Future Proof Shipping (FPS) was able to advance toward a hydrogen-driven vessel by retrofitting a diesel engine-based vessel to this new technology. A fantastic launch event on May 25-26, 2023, gathered more than 400 people. The H2 Barge 1 is the world's first inland container ship running 100% on hydrogen. And since it uses only green hydrogen, it is also the world's first emission-free container ship. The Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management attended the launch event and presented FPS founder Huib van de Grijspaarde with a unique label awarded only to zero-emission vessels. This label is a Dutch initiative that hopes to expand to the European level. The vessel operates between Rotterdam and Antwerp and is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2000 tonnes of CO2 annually. Following the example of the H2 Barge 1, a second vessel started its journey through green-transition. In particular in August 2023 the diesel engines have been removed and the fuel cell room and forward technical space/battery room was installed in the cargo hold of the vessel. In September 2023 the installation of electric motor, the main switchboards, and the installation of electrical/cooling systems in the main propulsion room was completed. In October 2023 * Construction of the first H2 containers have been completed, together with the installation of battery system, the installation of electric motor, and the installation of main H2 piping and venting systems. Full commercial operations expected end Dec 2023 - Mid Jan 2024. Finally, the Pure Energy Centre, thought about the shoreside supply and safety of hydrogen. Making hydrogen fuel safe is the most critical aspect when developing a hydrogen project, system or product. The process of making hydrogen use safe must be supported as any failure could cost lives and lead to the failure of expensive equipment with associated company loss of income and injuries. PURE built a mobile fuelling station for the production and storage of hydrogen and trained staff to use it.
