Description (EN):

Affordable, reliable and efficient supply and usage of energy is a major challenge for NPA communities. The approach of the SMARCTIC project to this challenge is to focus, not on individual buildings or public infrastructure, but on the entire stock of buildings and public infrastructure within the community and to minimise overall energy usage within the geographic boundary of that community. The main output, implementing the above approach, will be an ICT-based solution, a “Smart Energy Management Model” adaptable for deployment in a typical NPA community. This solution will be adapted from existing smart city models and use ICT technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT). It will facilitate innovative energy pilots with companies and researchers; enable communication between energy stakeholders (e.g., consumers, public infrastructure owners) to build awareness, trial new solutions and change energy behaviour; collect and share energy data from multiple sources (buildings and houses, public lighting, road traffic, local weather). This will drive achievement of the project’s main result, i.e., “5 NPA regions with enhanced capacity to deliver high-quality and integrated energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions in their communities” . This will contribute to achievement of the NPAs programme result for Priority Axis 3. Transnational cooperation is key to achieve the above result due to the need to: bring the range of ICT and energy specialisms from different parts of the NPA; transfer and integrate pilots, models and user requirements to achieve a robust transboundary solution and; achieve economies of scale. The project budget is €1.4 million and the partnership contains a mix of partners from the public sector, university and business in Finland, Ireland, Sweden, UK and Iceland (with associate partners in Norway and Canada).

Expected Results (EN): Awareness of energy efficiency opportunities and renewable solutions in housing sector and public infrastructures in remote and sparsely populated areas

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main result of the SMARCTIC project is “5 NPA regions with enhanced capacity to deliver high-quality and integrated energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions in their communities”. This will contribute positively to the programme result indicator for Axis 3, “Awareness of energy efficiency opportunities and renewable solutions in housing sector and public infrastructures in remote and sparsely populated areas”. This positive contribution is described below. Raising awareness will be channeled through the project’s main output - Smart Energy Management Model. This will enable all stakeholders and actors to have integrated visibility of project activities across a number of project dimensions in near real-time. They will also be able to react and make decisions based on community and own-household. For example: - Residents or citizens: will have total visibility of their community’s energy efficiency rankings, as well as their position in the ranking using data visualisation tools. They will have visibility of the energy usage of all devices in their household, enabling direct energy efficiency choices to be made. They will be able to trial different energy saving solutions, offered by suppliers and public authorities on the platform. They will also have access to information regarding the status of energy pilots occurring in the community. - Public building owners: Public authorities will be able to publish and make visible to other stakeholders their community energy plans on the platform. They will be able to monitor the energy performance of the entire community and well as optimise, in an integrated way, the energy performance of public infrastructure, including public buildings and facilities (swimming pools and libraries) and public lighting. They will also be able to publicise, engage with house owners, and process orders for energy grant and incentive schemes. They will engage with citizens, universities and business to develop and roll-out energy pilots. - Business and Innovation: Gateways will be provided to enable business suppliers of energy (including alternative energy suppliers), as well as suppliers of energy efficiency solutions to connect their solutions to the platform. - Universities and energy research centres, for example, will be able to use the data from the platform to gain energy saving insights, as well as trial new innovative energy solutions and approaches. - Longer Term: In the longer term, direct connections to the Community Smart Energy Platform from the smart grid networks are planned. This will occur as markets for trading alternative sources of energy mature, grids become smarter and standards emerge. Plans will also be made to utilise the platform to plan for the emergence of the circular economy, particularly as it effects housing and public infrastructure.
