The HUGE project aims to provide communities with energy security by delivering to them the necessary tools to assess the hydrogen renewable energy chain opportunities in the Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA) area and beyond.Whilst many communities in the NPA are challenged by low economic diversity, result of their peripheral locations, dispersed demography and lack of critical mass, they have abundant amounts of renewable energy resources available locally.On many occasions, where renewables are implemented, the generated electricity/heat is more than that required by the local population. At the same time the electric grid infrastructure in many NPA areas is underdeveloped, resulting in the curtailment of green electricity production, and inefficient resource use as clean energy is left unharnessed. Similar situations are encountered by communities living off-grid where the mechanisms do not exist to harness the excess energy generated nor store it efficiently.HUGE aims to overcome these barriers by building capacity in communities, with the help of sectoral agencies and SME’s to exploit the abundance of natural resources to their full potential through raising awareness about the benefits that can be delivered by employing a hydrogen economy.HUGE will achieve this by assessing the hydrogen renewable energy chain from production through storage to transportation and on to the end-user.We’ll accomplish it by identifying and assessing viable technical processes for hydrogen operations, creating a business model for hydrogen utilization and enabling effective knowledge transfer through an online, multilingual platform.The result is the Hydrogen Operational Technical (HOT) service,created by direct interaction with the relevant end-users and stakeholders, and ready for them to implement. Hydrogen is a flexible energy carrier, can be produced from any prevalent source and effectively transformed for diverse end-use applications.

Expected Results (EN): Awareness of energy efficiency opportunities and renewable solutions in housing sector and public infrastructures in remote and sparsely populated areas

Expected Outputs (EN):

The HUGE project aims to provide communities with energy security and self-sufficiency through increasing awareness and facilitating uptake of hydrogen utilization from excess renewable energy. The HUGE project aims to increase the awareness of hydrogen as a viable energy option for a variety of end uses in the public infrastructure domain (housing, transport and industry) and promote the importance of storing green energy as part of grid balancing in remote, small micro grids based on renewable energy. These features can make non-grid connected communities self-sufficient with green energy in the near future. In the rural partner areas to the project there is a huge potential for hydrogen utilisation, however due to the territorial challenges outlined, particularly labour market and peripherally, the uptake may not be as quick as is needed to fully address the challenges faced by our communities. Providing a structure (TEA tool and HUB model) to follow for the creation and implementation of a hydrogen supply chain, as well as a platform (HTT platform), to learn and share with other regions with shared opportunities and challenges, is essential to the early uptake and use of hydrogen. The comprehensive TEA and all-inclusive HUB case scenario, allows hydrogen to be presented to the relevant stakeholders in the public infrastructure domain and beyond in a robust manner with the benefits and challenges clearly outlined. By having such a methodology (TEA tool and HUB model) alongside engagement with the stakeholders (The Stakeholder Advisory Committee and beyond) allows hydrogen to become an understandable and viable technology for them to consider in future decisions about energy – both on a micro and macro scale. The project goals can offer a wide range of opportunities for communities/SMEs/entrepreneurs/local national authorities based in the NPA area. At the same time, the results have a promising future in each of the project partner regions far beyond the project life. The HUGE project can provide the necessary resources for some of the partner’s regions to achieve the climate change targets set for 2030 and 2050. It is important that those opportunities are explored in a timely manner and the HOT service aims to accomplish it and make it publically available. The project will provide valuable insight into the challenges and obstacles of implementing hydrogen into a local and decentralized energy system. One of the main results will be to demonstrate the effective operation, feasibility and practicability of the HOT service by case study scenarios creation on the potential to bring hydrogen to the identified by project partnership local areas (Fort William in Scotland; Aran Islands in Ireland; Nolsoy Island in Faroes and a transport case in Iceland) to create solutions for a stand-alone renewable energy system tailored to meet the public infrastructure needs in peripheral and sparsely populated areas in the NPA region.
