Cross-border approach: Historical Setomaa area covers the territory of Värska, Meremäe, Mikitamäe and Luhamaa areas in Estonian side and Pechory district in Russia. It means that big part of local cultural and historical heritage - seto heritage - is similar in both side of the border. It is the common challenge and task of local communities, families, municipal authorities, school teachers etc to encourage younger generation to learn and to value rich and unique local seto and Pechory cultural heritage and traditions. If they succeed, then it gives a good reason for young people to stay or to return (after finalizing their education) to their home region. This is one of the major key factors ensuring the socio-economical development and sustainability of the project area both side on the border. Common challenge: Attracting young people to stay and work in their home region (or return after finalizing their education) is essential for all local municipalities. Otherwise the rural areas just fade away. This problem is similarly acute in all rural remote areas in both side of the border. The viability and sustainability of rural remote areas depends on their ability to attract young people to stay or return to their home area and to start familys and to create jobs there. One possibility is to introduce and promote to the children the uniqueness of local cultural heritage from very young age, so they accept is as part of their daily lives. Overall objective: Project aim is improved cooperation between municipal authorities and communities in introducing old traditions, customs and language in schools locating in historical Setomaa territory in order to preserve and promote local cultural and historical heritage. It includes celebration of religious and traditional holidays, food and handicraft traditions, old games, singing (seto leelo) and dancing traditions. Important task is to implement most appropriate methodology and approach for heritage teaching to local children and youngsters in an attractive way. The participation in project events and heritage teaching programme is voluntary for students. Specific objectives are: 1) Attractive heritage teaching programme created for schools in historical Setomaa area; and 2) Strong cooperation network created between municipalities, school and local communities Activities and outputs: WP2: Partners involve best heritage specialists available in project area and also external experts to creation/updating of heritage teaching programme for 2 school grades. It will be piloted during 2019-2020 school year. The aim of the programme is increased children’s motivation to preserve local heritage culture and stronger identity. The activities include also joint training of teachers, development of joint teaching materials and providing needed equipment and materials to schools for teaching practical (music, handicraft etc) skills. WP3: Partners organize many joint events for teachers and students (study visits, winter and summer camps, joint celebration of traditional holidays, joint competitions etc). The events will be organized separately for 3 school grades- primary school (1.-3.school year), basic school (4.-9.school year) and high school (10.-12.school year). Partners make close cooperation during joint development of the heritage teaching programme and teaching materials. As a result of these joint events and activities strong cooperation network will be established. Main result: Ca 500 students (ca 40% from total number of students) from 7 schools interested in learning local cultural heritage and history have better access to high quality social (youth) service - additional heritage teaching programme. Other expected results are: • The capacity of local schools and communities in historical Setomaa area to introduce local cultural heritage to younger generation has strengthened • Learning programs on local heritage culture are prepared/updated and piloted in different school grades. • Ca 10-15 teachers have gained practical and theoretical knowledge and skills on how to teach heritage culture in modern learning environment • Schools are better equipped with traditional equipment (music instruments, games, handicraft tools etc.) to enhance students’ practical skills of local culture and traditions • Strong cooperation network of teachers and children has established during joint events (study tours, summer and winter camps, joint celebration of traditional holidays etc.),

Expected Outputs (EN):

Offering different programmes and organizing events for students on a voluntary basis outside regular school programme is a social service targeted to children and youngsters. As a main result ca 500 students (ca 40% from total number of students from 7 schools) willing to learn local cultural heritage and history have better access to high quality social (youth) service developed by the project.
