Description (IT): ll cancro è una malattia ad alta incidenza nell'area coperta dal programma di cooperazione Interreg V-A ItaliaÖsterreich. Questo determina una forte pressione sui bilanci sanitari anche in relazione ai costi delle nuove terapie. Una problematica da affrontare con urgenza riguarda la possibilità di sostenere un'assistenza sanitaria di alta qualità evitando gli sprechi e l'inefficienza. Il progetto EPIC affronterà questo problema e svilupperà soluzioni migliorative e più sostenibili per le terapie anticancro. Un approccio integrato che non si basa solo sullo sviluppo di nuovi farmaci. EPIC si concentrerà anche sul miglioramento dei metodi per prevedere l'efficacia dei farmaci nell'immunoterapia. Istituti di ricerca italiani ed austriaci, con percorsi di eccellenza e competenze complementari (Chimica, Medicina, Biologia e Bioinformatica), daranno origine alla rete EPIC per fornire nuovi progressi all'immunoterapia anticancro e per favorire la diffusione di conoscenze aperte e accessibili agli stakeholder dei territori interessati quali: le accademie, le strutture cliniche e la cittadinanza. Il programma di ricerca è pienamente integrato e conforme agli obiettivi del RIS3 (specializzazioni innovative regionali) "smart health" per la regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia e per l' Alto Adige/Sud Tirolo, così come, del Life Science Strategy (WISS 2025) per il Salisburghese.
Read more Description (DE): Krebserkrankungen weisen in dem Gebiet von Interreg V-A Italia-Österreich eine hohe Häufigkeit auf. Als Folge dessen, und auf Grund kostspieliger neuer Therapieformen, sind die Gesundheitsbudgets unter zunehmenden Druck. Die Unterstützung einer qualitativ hochwertigen Gesundheitsversorgung unter Vermeidung von Ineffizienz und Verschwendung im Gesundheitssystem ist daher ein dringend zu behandelndes Thema. Das EPIC Projekt wird sich mit diesem Thema auseinandersetzen und bessere Lösungen für nachhaltigere Krebsbehandlungen entwickeln. Diese basieren nicht nur auf der Entwicklung neuer Medikamente, sondern werden sich auch auf die Verbesserung von Vorhersagemethoden zur Wirksamkeit von Medikamenten in der Krebsimmuntherapie konzentrieren. Italienische und österreichische Forschungseinrichtungen mit Exzellenzanspruch und komplementärer Expertise (Chemie, Medizin, Biologie und Bioinformatik) werden das EPIC Netzwerk erschaffen, um neue Fortschritte in der Immuntherapie bei Krebs zu ermöglichen und Akademien, klinischen Zentren und allen weiteren Interessengruppen offen zugängliches Wissen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Das Programm entspricht den RIS3 (Regional Innovative Specializations) Zielen „smart-health“ für die Regionen Friaul- Julisch Venezien und Südtirol, sowie der Life Science Strategie (WISS 2025) für Salzburg.
Read more Description (EN): Cancer shows a high incidence in the area covered by the Interreg V-A ItaliaÖsterreich cooperation programme. As a consequence health budgets are under pressure, also in relation to the costs of new therapies. One issue that needs to be urgently addressed is the possibility of supporting high quality health care by avoiding waste and inefficiency of health systems. The EPIC project will address this problem and develop improved and more sustainable solutions for cancer therapies. These are not only based on the development of new drugs. EPIC will also focus on improving methods for predicting drug efficacy in cancer immunotherapy. Italian and Austrian research institutes with complementary tracks of excellence and expertise (Chemistry, Medicine, Biology and Bioinformatics) will create the EPIC network to provide new advances in cancer immunotherapy and to provide open and accessible knowledge to the territories of the program, including academies, clinical centers and all stakeholders. The program meets the RIS3 (Regional Innovative Specializations) objectives „smart-health“ of the regions Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Alto Adige/Südtirol, as well as the Life Science Strategy (WISS 2025) of Salzburg.

Expected Results (IT): L’incidenza del cancro, associata al progressivo invecchiamento della popolazione nell’area oggetto del programma, genera problemi sia di gestione sanitaria che di sostenibilità economica, particolarmente in presenza di terapie innovative molto costose. Tra le più promettenti troviamo l‘immunoterapia. Purtroppo però, solo una frazione dei pazienti risponde all’immunoterapia. Questo genera false aspettative e notevoli sprechi di risorse. La mancata risposta deriva dal quadro di alterazioni genetiche ed epigenetiche che differiscono tra pazienti. Se le mutazioni genetiche sono irreversibili, le alterazioni epigenetiche possono essere normalizzate attraverso specifici farmaci. L’area di programma si caratterizza per la qualità della ricerca scientifica che si svolge presso centri di ricerca in campo oncologico. Le loro ridotte dimensioni e la ridotta capacità di investimento sono però una minaccia, rispetto ai centri in aree metropolitane europee ed extra-europee. Una minaccia che può essere abbattuta creando organizzazioni in rete tra Italia ed Austria. Obiettivo del progetto è la creazione di una rete tra enti di ricerca volta a unire e rafforzare le competenze tecnologiche e scientifiche nel settore dell’oncologia. Una rete (EPIC) multidisciplinare per potenziare l’immunoterapia. Secondo obiettivo, volto a risolvere una debolezza innovativa dell’Area di Programma, è creare nuove opportunità di imprenditorialità nell’ambito biomed/biotech attraverso lo sviluppo di farmaci epigenetici, brevettabili. Lo scambio delle conoscenze e delle competenze tecniche, i sinergismi multidisciplinari, il reclutamento e la formazione di giovani ricercatori e la diffusione della cultura scientifica, organizzando workshop, incontri con i mass-media ed i portatori di interesse saranno le attività di EPIC. I risultati attesi sono: formazione di personale qualificato, pubblicazioni scientifiche, definizione di nuovi target e di nuovi brevetti a disposizione degli enti di ricerca.
Read more Expected Results (DE): Mit fortschreitender Alterung der Bevölkerung steigt die Krebshäufigkeit in der Region. Immuntherapie ist eine der vielversprechendsten Behandlungsmöglichkeiten. Dennoch ergibt sich für viele Krebspatienten das Problem, dass sie auf Grund von genetischen und epigenetischen Veränderungen auf diese kostenintensive Behandlungsmethode nicht ansprechen, was zu Problemen im Gesundheitsmanagement und zu erheblicher Ressourcenverschwendung führt. Der Bedarf an intensiver Forschungstätigkeit zur Verbesserung der Immuntherapie ist daher groß. Die Chance der Universitäten und Forschungszentren aus der Region Südtirol, Friaul-Julisch Venetien und Salzburg liegt in der hohen wissenschaftlichen Qualität ihrer Krebsforschung. Durch die Schaffung eines intensiven Forschungsnetzwerks zwischen Italien und Österreich kann zusätzlich dem Risiko begegnet werden, dass jede einzelne Forschungseinrichtung im Vergleich zu ähnlichen Einrichtungen in großen Metropolen an Bedeutung verliert, da nur begrenzte Investitionen in Infrastruktur und Personal zur Verfügung stehen. Das Ziel des Projekts EPIC ist es, ein multidisziplinäres Forschungsnetzwerk zu schaffen, das technologische und wissenschaftliche Expertise im Bereich der Krebsforschung bündelt und stärkt. Neue, innovative Konzepte, wie die Entwicklung epigenetischer Arzneimittel, werden zur Verbesserung der Immuntherapie beitragen und zusätzlich in der Region eine gute Basis für Unternehmen im Bereich Biomedizin/Biotechnologie in schaffen.
Zu den Aktivitäten von EPIC zählen: die Ausbildung junger Forscher zu hochqualifiziertem Personal mit multidisziplinärer Erfahrung, die Verbreitung von neuem Wissen durch Workshops und Kongressbesuche, und ein reger Wissenschaftsaustausch durch Treffen mit verschiedenen Interessengruppen und Medien. Neue therapeutische Moleküle, hohe Qualität in Forschung und Ausbildung, verbesserte Wissenschaftskommunikation, sowie eine gute Basis für die Gründung neuer Unternehmen werden als Ergebnisse erwartet.
Read more Expected Results (EN): As the population ages, the incidence of cancer in the region increases. Immunotherapy is one of the most promising treatment options. Nevertheless, many cancer patients face the problem that they are unable to treat cancer due to genetic and epigenetic factors. changes do not respond to this cost-intensive treatment method, leading to health management problems and to a significant waste of resources. The need for intensive research to improve immunotherapy is therefore great. The opportunity for universities and research centres in the South Tyrol, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Salzburg regions lies in the high scientific quality of their cancer research. By creating an intensive research network between Italy and Austria, it is also possible to counter the risk that each individual research institution, in comparison with similar institutions in large metropolises is becoming less important as only limited investments in infrastructure and personnel are available. The aim of the EPIC project is to create a multidisciplinary research network that combines and strengthens technological and scientific expertise in the field of cancer research. New, innovative concepts, such as the development of epigenetic drugs, will contribute to the improvement of immunotherapy and additionally create a good basis for biomedical/biotechnological companies in the region.
EPIC's activities include the training of young researchers to become highly qualified personnel with multidisciplinary experience, the dissemination of new knowledge through workshops and congresses, and a lively exchange of science through meetings with various stakeholders and media. New therapeutic molecules, high quality in research and education, improved science communication, as well as a good basis for the creation of new companies are expected as results.
Read more Expected Outputs (IT): OI1 - Numero di cooperazioni scientifiche sostenute: 15,00. Architrave portante di EPIC è la cooperazione scientifica. Le azioni principali di EPIC prevedono una cooperazione condivisa tra tutti i Partner. Inoltre sarà scopo del progetto instaurare nuove cooperazioni scientifiche tra i singoli Partner stimolando nuove opportunità di scambio e di cross-contaminazione tra la regione FVG, il Sud-Tirolo e il Land Salisburghese. Ciascun Partner coopererà con gli altri membri della rete. Sono previste molteplici attività congiunte per organizzare seminari, workshop, summer school, pubblicazioni. In conclusione l'indicatore di output in oggetto è superabile da EPIC. Da considerare anche che le nuove scoperte permetteranno di attivare ulteriori cooperazioni con enti di ricerca esterni al partenariato e all’area transfrontaliera oggetto dell’intervento.
CO42 - Numero di istituti di ricerca partecipanti a progetti di ricerca transfrontalieri: 7,00. EPIC è costruito su 4 istituti di ricerca transfrontalieri dove tutti partecipano con comparabile impegno al progetto di ricerca. Inoltre sono presenti ulteriori enti ed ospedali come Partner Associati. E’ altamente probabile che su questa rete si inneschino ulteriori collaborazioni con altri entri di ricerca sul territorio attivi nella ricerca oncologica e che già interagiscono con i referenti dei diversi Partner, ad esempio per l’FVG il CRO di Aviano, il CBM e il l’Ospedale infantile Burlo Garofalo di Trieste
OI2 - Numero dei ricercatori transfrontalieri coinvolti nei progetti: 36,00. Come descritto all’indicatore di risultato RI 1 le diverse attività di comunicazione, formazione e di ricerca durante il periodo oggetto dell’intervento coinvolgeranno non meno di 36 ricercatori trans-frontalieri includendo professori, ricercatori senior, ricercatori post-dottorato, medici, studenti di dottorato e studenti di laurea magistrale in discipline scientifiche e mediche.

Darüber hinaus zielt das Projekt darauf ab, eine erweiterte wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit zwischen den einzelnen Partnern zu etablieren, indem es neue Möglichkeiten des gegenseitigen Austauschs zwischen der FVG-Region, Südtirol und dem Salzburger Land fördert. Jeder Partner wird mit den anderen Mitgliedern des Netzwerks zusammenarbeiten. Dabei sind mehrere gemeinsame Aktivitäten geplant, um Seminare, Workshops, Sommerschulen und Veröffentlichungen zu organisieren. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass der betreffende Output-Indikator von EPIC übertroffen wird. Darüber hinaus sollte
berücksichtigt werden, dass die neu gewonnen wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse das Potenzial zu weiterer Zusammenarbeit mit Forschungseinrichtungen außerhalb der Partnerschaft und/oder des von Interreg abgedeckten geographischen Gebiets besitzen.
CO42 - Zahl der Forschungseinrichtungen, die an grenzübergreifenden Forschungsvorhaben teilnehmen: 7,00. Das EPIC Netzwerk besteht aus vier grenzüberschreitenden Forschungseinrichtungen, an denen alle mit vergleichbarem Engagement am Forschungsprojekt teilnehmen. Darüber hinaus gibt es weitere Institutionen und Krankenhäuser als assoziierte Partner. Es ist sehr wahrscheinlich, dass dieses Netzwerk weitere Kooperationen mit anderen lokalen Forschungseinrichtungen aus der Krebsforschung auslösen wird, die bereits mit den Vertretern der verschiedenen Partner interagieren: zum Beispiel das CRO in Aviano (FVG-Region), sowie das CBM (Triest) und das Burlo Garofalo Kinderkrankenhaus (ebenfalls Triest).
OI2 - Zahl der grenzüberschreitend aktiven Forscher in den Projekten: 36,00. Wie im Ergebnisindikator RI1 beschrieben, werden an den verschiedenen Kommunikations-, Trainings- und Forschungsaktivitäten während des Projektzeitraums nicht weniger als 36 grenzüberschreitende Forscher beteiligt sein, darunter Professoren, leitende Forscher, Postdoktoranden, Ärzte, Doktoranden sowie Naturwissenschafts- und Medizinstudenten.

In addition, the project aims to establish extended scientific cooperation between the individual partners by promoting new opportunities for mutual exchange between the FVG region, South Tyrol and the Salzburger Land. Each partner will collaborate with the other members of the network. Several joint activities are planned to organise seminars, workshops, summer schools and publications. In summary, EPIC outperforms the relevant output indicator. In addition take into account that the newly acquired scientific knowledge has the potential for further cooperation with research organisations outside the partnership and/or the geographical area covered by Interreg.
CO42 - Number of research organisations participating in transnational research projects: 7.00. The EPIC network consists of four transnational research organisations, all participating in the research project with comparable commitment. In addition, there are other institutions and hospitals as associated partners. It is very likely that this network will trigger further collaborations with other local cancer research institutions already interacting with the representatives of the different partners: for example the CRO in Aviano (FVG region), as well as the CBM (Trieste) and the Burlo Garofalo Children's Hospital (also Trieste).
