Description (EN):

Green Infrastructures (GI) are considered a benefit, inter alia, for territorial development because they provide multiple functions on the same spatial area. The underlying principle of GI is that the same area of land can offer many environmental, social, cultural and economic benefits at the same time, provided its ecosystems are in a healthy condition. However, valuable European ecosystems are being degraded by land fragmentation, urban expansion and the building of transport and energy infrastructures. This affects habitats and species and reduces the spatial and functional coherence of the landscape. Degraded ecosystems have lower species richness and are unable to offer the same services as healthy ecosystems. Ecosystem services cover the benefits that can be derived from ecosystems, including among others the provision by nature of food, materials, clean water, clean air, climate regulation, flood prevention, pollination and recreation.

Expected Results (EN):

The main outcomes of the service should be: overview on the geographical distribution of GI and ecosystem services in European cities and regions, and, if possible, changes in that respect over the past 10 years, taking account of the MAES work.Knowledge about potential positive and negative effects of GI and ecosystem services on territorial development.Evidence on means that can help in unlocking the GI and ecosystem services potential for further territorial development.Case studies on different types of European cities and regions (incl. functional regions or macro-regions) that provide (a) a more detailed insight into the benefits of GI and ecosystem services for smart, sustainable and inclusive territorial development in a consistent and mutually supportive way; (b) the use of GI and ecosystem services in territorial development; (c) the governance mechanisms applied to implement GI and enhance ecosystem services.Knowledge about the factors that can support European cities and regions (incl. functional regions) in making full use of their GI and ecosystem services development potential.Provision of guidance to authorities in the areas of (a) identification of investment opportunities, mainly through spatial planning; (b) identification of GI built up, also in functional and/or transnational regions; (c) possibilities for private sector involvement; (d) governance mechanisms that proved to work well in different types of cities and regions (link to case study work); (e) access to finance.
