Innovation is changing, and large companies are increasingly acknowledging the fact that startups and SMEs, especially in digital and technology businesses, are disrupting whole industries from the bottom up. Startups / SMEs and large companies could bring each other immense opportunities through collaborations that, if used correctly, create win-win situations for both. Such collaboration would mean increased number of innovative solutions and products launched and taken up by the market, and an increased regional innovation capacity thereof. Project aims at fostering such win-win collaboration among large companies and clean technology startups/SMEs. Cleantech has a huge growth potential in project partner countries and in EU, and an innovation support system that adequately addresses the challenges and potential of the disruptive startups/SMEs and provides framework of co-creation and open innovation between companies in different sizes and complementary strengths, is needed. Project designs such innovation support framework and pilots it in partner countries. It consists of 3 Programmes, each targeted to certain maturity and sized companies, starting from lower level engagement and maturity of the participating companies towards deeper level of engagement. Business Support Programme is meant for startups/SMEs enabling them to organize their businesses so that they would be able to partner up with the large companies; Innovation Support Programme for increasing large companies´ awareness and designing events for collaboration; and Matchmaking Acceleration Programmes for tailor-made open innovation practices between certain large company and matching startups / SMEs. Programmes will be piloted among ca 200 cleantech startups/SMEs and 5 large companies in PL, SK, SI, HU and CR. It is expected that the framework and Programmes, as well as experiences of designing and piloting them, are transferred to other business support organisations in the EU.

Achievements (EN):

InNow project addressed the hot issue of innovations so necessary to boost development of cleantech sector in Central Europe. Partners from: Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia looked for practical solutions how to foster collaboration and innovation co-creation between cleantech startups/SMEs and large companies. The change is that, going beyond traditional procurer-supplier relationship and addressing the obstacles that companies in both sizes traditionally have, both target groups' strengths can be utilised to the maximum extent and as a result, more innovative products and services will be offered as a long-term impact. This was done through enabling more efficient way to collaborate with other interested stakeholders. Project has shown the need to better understand potential partners approach and way of thinking as well as identifying their needs. For both the startups and large companies it became obvious that most beneficial might be international cooperation. During the matchmaking acceleration programme pilots startups could declare what company and market they are interested in. It turned out that they are very open to develop their business to international markets seeing a great potential there. Also corporates concentrated on their actual innovation needs and not on the availability of the solution in their own market. These approaches enhance the international cooperation where state border are less important than potential cooperation benefits. Language barrier also turned out to be of lesser importance as for most startups at least communicative level English is prevailing. Even though not all startups had in fact a chance to start a more elaborated cooperation with large companies they gained some experience that indicated them the way they should follow in order to find way for commercialisation of their innovations. This also showcased to all involved stakeholders (startups/SMEs, large companies and business support organisations that going beyond purely competitive co-existence into complementary collaboration in today's highly specialised economy can bring mutual benefits and added values for all of them. These results through application of new tools and services particularly contributed to potential improvements of 3S strategies in the programme areas and beyond.

Expected Results (EN): R 1.1 Status of linkages among actors of the innovation systems achieved through transnational cooperation in central European regions.

Expected Outputs (EN):

As a result of the project, new type of collaboration support to enhance linkages among cleantech startups/SMEs and large companies in PL, SK, SI, HU and CR has been established by joint development and piloting of the Innovation Support Framework programmes with involvement of ca 200 startups/SMEs and minimum 5 LC-s in partner regions. As project partners represent triple helix cooperation in their regions (see more under Partner and Transnational cooperation section) and constantly implement several business support services in businesses, academia and public sector cooperation, the improved capacity of the partners to enhance innovation co-creation among the business sector actors - startups/SMEs and LCs - results with the increased regional innovation capacity and increased delivery of new cleantech products and services to the market. Innovation Support Framework programmes will be maintained and implemented by partners also after the project duration as part of their business support services portfolio.
