Description (EN):

Buildings are responsible for 36% of global final energy consumption and nearly 40% of total direct and indirect CO2 emissions. In such a challenging situation, renovating and making Mediterranean buildings smarter is of utmost importance to reduce the carbon footprint of our homes. BEEP project aims at strengthening the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) - a process supported by various tools and technologies involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places - to enhance energy efficiency in buildings. The testing of this emerging technology on built heritage will be performed to demonstrate its scalability to the entire building stock. The project will provide public administrations with a powerful method for the energy rehabilitation of public buildings to be supported with private funds through the Energy Performance Contracting. The project main outcome will be an innovative methodology based on the integration of emerging technologies tested on heritage public buildings. The results will streamline the sustainable rehabilitation process and start a virtuous circle where the money saved by public administrations in managing public assets will be used to multiply the interventions on the existing building stock.

Achievements (EN):

The ENI CBC Med BEEP project comes to an end after a 40-months journey. One of its main outcomes has been the development of a guideline on the energy and environmental improvement of public historic buildings using the “Heritage Building Information modelling (HBIM)” methodology and simulation-based approach. The guideline presents a workflow, from building analysis to the design, simulation and evaluation of interventions, that can be applied by building owners and managers and can be useful for all the professionals involved in the process. It also describes the potential and the application of the use of Energy Performance Contracts (EPC) as financing mechanism. This guideline aims to enhance the capacity of public local administrations and professionals of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector to design and carry out sensitive retrofitting interventions on historic public buildings, through a multidisciplinary and integrated digital approach (using Building Information Modelling and performance-based design to develop an Energy Efficient Heritage Building Information Model - EE-HBIM). The guideline is based on the testing of this emerging technology on nine heritage public buildings located in Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt to demonstrate its scalability to the entire building stock of the Med area.

1 energy efficiency heritage Building Information Model developed. 1 training guide for architecture, energy and construction professionals involved in the refurbishment of buildings. 1 competency framework for public procurement technical officers. 9 pilot projects for the implementation of Energy Performance Contracting. 9 case studies on innovative energy rehabilitation interventions of historical buildings. 1 Memorandum of Understanding promoting a common strategic policy for refurbishment using Building Information Modeling.

3.1 - Requirements for interoperable models, nomenclature and schemes to be used for the pilot actions, 3.2 - Analysis for the innovative energy rehabilitation intervention, 3.3 - Energy Efficiency Heritage Building Information Model (EE-HBIM), 3.4 - Guidelines for EE-HBIM development of existing buildings, 4.1 - Energy rehabilitation intervention design with three scenarios (short, middle and long term), 4.2 - 4D and 5D EE-HBIM implementation of the three scenarios, 4.3 - 6D EE-HBIM implementation of the three scenarios, 4.4 - 4,5,6D Energy Efficient Heritage Building Information Model (EE-HBIM), 4.5 - Guidelines for 4D, 5D and 6D EE-HBIM, 5.1 - Technical guideline for EPC using BIM, 5.2 - Strategic guideline on EPC and BIM, 5.3 - Energy Performance Contracting format implementation, 6.1 - MoU for common strategic policy for refurbishment using BIM., 6.2 - Technical report for EEHBIM data in IFC standard (ISO 16739:2013), 6.3 - Guideline for AEC professionals training providers, 6.4 - Competence framework for public procurement technical officers.
