Many challenges are threatening the Mediterranean agro-food sector like the gradual loss of local varieties, a high sectorial fragmentation, rural poverty (mostly affecting women) and limited investment capacity of rural entrepreneurs, lack of training on socio-environmental sustainability, weak business planning and marketing strategies. Moreover, EU food security regulations represent a barrier for many small producers from non-EU countries. MedSNAIL will address these issues by fostering the enhancement and development of small-scale traditional agro-food value chains that will offer increased business opportunities and more socio-environmental sustainability. The project will build on the well-established experience and methods of SlowFood, an international grassroots organization promoting traditional food with a strong focus on biodiversity preservation.

Achievements (EN):

MedSNAIL promotes the value of local consumption through its Chefs' Alliance, Narrative Labels and Geodatabase: After months of intensive work with the food ecosystems of the six MedSNAIL pilot areas in Jordan, Lebanon, Malta, Palestine, Spain and Tunisia, the project has launched two of its main pilot initiatives, inspired by the methodology of MedSNAIL's Italian partner, the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity. MedSNAIL Narrative Labels On the one hand, the Narrative Labels initiative works to strengthen the productive network MedSNAIL pilot areas making visible the attributes of local products through a distinctive labelling system that values their origin, production process and elaboration. This action aims to raise awareness among local citizens of the added value of these local products beyond their industrial labelling, highlighting the way in which they have been produced and processed. In addition, this initiative brings these local products closer to consumer profiles that are aware of responsible and local consumption, as well as introducing them into new sales channels. MedSNAIL Chefs’ Alliance On the other hand, the MedSNAIL Chefs' Alliance initiative works to consolidate direct relationships and linkages among professionals in the gastronomic sector. At the same time, it seeks to foster and strengthen the collaboration between chefs and producers. This directory compiles an entire catalog of Mediterranean restaurants committed to local products grown and processed taking into account the value of tradition, respect for local biodiversity and artisan work. Finally, the MedSNAIL Geodatabase is a digital tool developed by Slow Food that allows any user to gain knowledge of the pilot areas that have participated in the project, as well as to identify the products selected as strategic by means of product files that describe their nature, production process and history. MedSNAIL Legacy: The methodological development of MedSNAIL should be understood as a “living” process in which the different pilot areas of the project have adapted the starting resources by introducing strategic innovations and sharing difficulties and solutions, resulting in a set of “territorialised” processes to move towards competitive, fair and sustainable food systems in the Mediterranean. In this way, the MedSNAIL Legacy will serve to document and transfer the main results of the project, in both quantitative and qualitative formats, to the future. Furthermore, it also aims to serve as a summary document, tracing the trajectory of the project as a Mediterranean cooperation experience, in which each partner, from its geographical area and field of expertise, has contributed and has been enriched with multiple lessons learned, which are also manifested in the pages of the document. With all this, the MedSNAIL Legacy is a proof, in the words of the partners themselves, of the transformative capacity that the project has shown in the areas selected for its implementation, and of how MedSNAIL has contributed to moving towards more sustainable agri-food models that are better able to face the challenges of our time.
