Description (EN):

In Mediterranean countries, water use for irrigation accounts for more than 70% of water consumption and an important hydric stress is registered due to increasing population and climate change. Water losses due to non-efficient irrigation systems, limited reliance on non-conventional water (NCW), scarce capacities of institutions to enforce effective water management plans and lack of awareness of modern solutions at farm level, are the most common issues to deal with. PROSIM will face these challenges focusing on both water demand and supply for irrigation. The project will bring innovative solutions combining water use efficiency and NCW and build local capacities to adopt/upscale them. Cross-border capacity building and roadmaps and plans for improved water management based on project results will be carried out while enhancing public-private cooperation will be fostered together with investments for the adoption/upscale of the proposed solutions.

Expected Results (EN):

4 investment initiatives to upscale mature innovation solutions having the best market potential. 4 cross-border thematic field visits to showcase most efficient irrigation techniques. 292 water stakeholders trained on water usage efficiency and non-conventional water use. 8 new technologies tested to demonstrate the potential of treated wastewater, desalination and mixed water for irrigation. 91 hectares of land irrigated with efficient and sustainable systems. 40 on-field dissemination days for 400 farmers to raise their awareness of new solutions for irrigation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

3.1 - Cross border training initiatives on WUE and NCWs for partner institutions, 3.2 - Capacity-building training programme on WUE and NCWs use for EAs and WUAs, 3.3 - Joint Letter of Commitment on adoption of WUE and NCWs solutions, 3.4 - 4 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on local WRM plans based on public-private cooperation, 4.1 - WUE irrigation systems demonstrated, 4.2 - WUE technology solutions demonstrated, 5.1 - TWW reuse solutions demonstrated, 5.2 - Desalination solutions demonstrated, 5.3 - Mixed waters solutions demonstrated.
