Description (EN):

The project ATRIUM PLUS, capitalizing the results of the previous South East Europe’s project ATRIUM, is aimed at creating a cultural tourist attraction of the heritage of the XXth century totalitarian regimes in an informed and ethical way. The project will define a common information strategy for visitors and carry out cross-border trainings for tourist guides, as well as a cross-border programme of study visits involving schools to test the cultural tourism potential of the architectures and memories in relation to the totalitarian regimes.

Achievements (EN):

The project reached the objective to promote and highlight the architectural heritage built by European non-democratic regimes of the 20th century. The specific intention of Atrium Plus was to exploit ATRIUM’s Cultural Route achievements, recognized by the Council of Europe in 2014, by contributing to make dissonant heritage a cultural tourism attraction to be approached always in an informed and ethic way. The Municipalities of Forlì (LP), Ferrara and Labin (ATRIUM Route members), Municipality of Bari, Municipality of Labin and University of Zadar have created educational programmes and Atrium Go! itinerary based on an ethical and responsible approach, stimulating students to reflect on the dramatic history linked to that dissonant heritage, as well as to explore culture, lifestyles, etc. of those regimes. Atrium Go! is an innovative schools’ educational tourism product aimed at ensuring both a careful interpretation of the “dissonant” heritage that Atrium Go! itineraries explore and participatory design by the means of co-creation. “Memowalk Atrium Plus” is a designed and tested experience with the aim of promoting a conscious use of the history and memories of the European 20th century among new generations. It involved young students, of the partner cities, in the creation of a tour proposal in their own city, specifically addressed to peers who, thanks to the new Memowalk, will be able to explore the ATRIUM heritage, therefore their own cities’ heritage, in an innovative way, to broaden the understanding of how architecture has been a fundamental pedagogical tool in the construction of consensus by the undemocratic regimes. The project’s innovative aspect is that all the educational materials have been designed by classes of young 17-year-old students of the different schools involved.

Expected Results (EN):

In all the cities areas involved in ATRIUM PLUS, there are buildings, places, monuments related to the totalitarian regimes of 1900s, often in a neglected / abandoned condition, and without a cross-border narrative file rouge and related tools (common brand, promotional material), enabling the new generations and visitors to know and understand their original function and hence their meaning within the historical context in which they were designed and built. In addition, in the cities/areas belonging to the existing Cultural Route ATRIUM, there aren't well-designed and recognizable cultural-tourism itineraries, because information - including ad hoc specific online and printed material and signposting - as well as specialized tourist guides are still missing. ATRIUM PLUS is intended to face and narrow the gaps above.

Expected Outputs (EN): - 3 Training programmes for professional and voluntary guides. - 1 Programme of study visits for schools to the considered heritage. - 1 Pilot cultural routes to create new tourism packages. - 25 Multilingual panels and totems.
