Description (EN):

The aim of "ECOMAP" is to help local ports to design better environmental strategies and to have access to suitable environmental management tools to remain competitive and to contribute to a more sustainable Programme area. Partners will work together to improve their environmental status, through investments in equipment and small infrastructure, education of staff and stakeholders, and environmental certifications. Best practices by leading-edge small ports will be identified through project communication and study visits. Information added on 2020-05-18, regarding the mitigation of the effects of COVID-19 (the coronavirus pandemic that started in 2019) (English language only): The sustainable management of the beaches and ports, the waste reductions and the risk management is the main objective of ECOMAP so the project will develop protocols for the use of the beach and marine in the project areas for tourism purpos with focus on precautions and social-distancing for the COVID-19 measures.

Achievements (EN):

The Municipality of Podstrana, as the leading partner and coordinator of the ""ECOMAP"" project, is completing the project activities. Over the past three years, the project has implemented numerous activities in Podstrana, Split, Ancona, Bibione, Ferrara. During the project, four ports (Strožanac, Špinut, Marina Dorica, and Porto Baseleghe) improved their ecological status by installing chemical and physical wastewater treatment plants, by procuring the necessary equipment to improve wastewater management. Within Ecomap, the Municipality has procured new equipment for decontamination of marine sediment at the mouth of the river Žrnovnica and its reuse to supplement the beach. It is a type of boat, a dredger, which will dredge the existing sand, silt, and gravel from the seabed that will be transferred directly to the shore. The coastal area of the Municipality of Podstrana is exposed to the river Žrnovnica, which brings suspended particles and waste material that settles, and also affects the area of the nearby port, and dredging will contribute to easier and safer access to ships. After drying and exposing the sediment to the sun, it will be microbiologically decontaminated to a sufficient extent and will be suitable for feeding the beach. During the project, two mobile recycling yards were also procured, to reduce the amount of unclassified waste in the coastal area of Podstrana. Panels have been installed to raise the environmental awareness of locals and visitors to the Municipality of Podstrana to treat our coast as responsibly as possible and keep it clean and tidy. Expected Outputs (EN):

The cooperation between partners- research institutions, municipalities and marina operators will ensure long-term durability of results and enable high- quality sea and coast protection measures and monitoring system to function long after the project closure. The quality of coastal bathing waters is expected to be improved due to project eco-sustainable infrastructure and equipment, in the long run. Education and designed curriculum will result with sustainable operation in small ports. Developed monitoring system will potentiate focussing on main pollutants in marinas and ensure long-term prevention of sea and coast pollution.The future cooperation between project partners will be formalized through Cluster of port cities.
