Die rückgewinnung von relativ kleinen mengen sehr wertvoller biomasseextrakten hat das Potenzial, die wirtschaftliche lebensfähigkeit von bioraffinerien zu verändern, was den Übergang zu einer zirkulären abfallfreien bioökonomie fördert. Durch eine umfassende transnationale zusammenarbeit wird BIOWill das problem der mangelnden vertikalen integration der wertschöpfungskette in der gesamten biomasseverarbeitungskette angehen, indem eine abfallfreie weidebioraffinerie entwickelt wird. BIOWill wird alle fraktionen des weiderohstoffes für die Herstellung biopharmazeutischer chemikalien, energie und materialien für eine nachhaltige und wirtschaftliche entwicklung verwenden. Dieses projekt wird die wirtschaftlichkeit skalierbarer ländlicher bioraffinerien für Nordwesteuropa (NWE) demonstrieren und somit auch alternative einkommen für landwirte sowie auch arbeitsplätze für eine breite kompetenzbasis schaffen. Das projekt wird ein Bioraffineriemodell für NWE liefern, das Weide (Willow) als Rohstoff verwendet. In Biowill werden hochwertige salicylate für die medizinische. Der rindenrückstand wird hydrolysiert für innovative anaerobe bioenergie-aufschlusssysteme. Die weidenpulpe wird zu verpackungsmaterial umgewandelt. Die Validierung der effizienzsteigerung durch die technologieintegration und eignung als „vorbildliche Praxis“, wird durch technologiedemonstrationen dargelegt. Durch technische analysen und intensive markt, regulierungs, Finanz und Umweltanalysen wird ein „Toolkit“ erstellt, das über ein umfangreiches Kommunikationsprogramm an alle Marktteilnehmer verbreitet werden kann.

The recovery of relatively small quantities of high value extractives from biomass has the potential to transform the economic viability of biorefineries promoting transition to a zero waste circular bioeconomy. Through transnational collaboration BIOWill addresses the problem of poor vertical integration of value for biomass by developing a zero waste willow biorefinery ultilising all fractions of the feedstock for the production of biopharmaceutical chemicals, energy and materials ensuring sustainable economic development. This project will demonstrate the commerciality of scalable rural biorefineries for the NWE providing alternative income for farmers and employment across a wide skill base. The project will deliver a Biorefinery model for North west Europe using Willow, by producing high value salicylates from willow bark for medical applications. The bark residue and bark-free willow pulp will converted into safe food quality packaging material to replace fossil derived plastics. The end of life packaging will be hydrolysed and used as a feedstock in an innovative bio-energy anaerobic digestion system producing biogas suitable for grid injection. Technology demonstrations will validate how technology integration can increase efficiency, qualifying as “best available practice”. Intensive market, regulatory, financial, technical & environmental analysis will produce a “toolkit” (LCAs, business models, etc) for dissemination to all market actors via an extensive communications programme. The project objective is to enable a zero waste biorefinery and provide a detailed plan for a sustainable circular low carbon economy. The approach would support the emergence of a competitive bioeconomy in the region, benefiting SMEs in NEW by bringing together all stakeholders in the value chain to systematically address the lack of reference plants and perceived risks and promote market replication in NWE area.

La récupération de quantités même faibles d'extractibles de haute valeur de biomasse transformera la viabilité économique des bioraffineries en favorisant la transition vers une bioéconomie circulaire. Via une collaboration transnationale, BIOWill s'attaquera au problème de faible intégration verticale de la valeur de la biomasse en développant une bioraffinerie zéro déchet, en transformant toute la biomasse en composants biopharmaceutiques, énergie et matériaux pour un développement économique durable. Ce projet démontrera la valeur commerciale des bioraffineries rurales pour le NWE, offrant un revenu alternatif aux agriculteurs et de l’emploi à large base de compétences. Le projet fournira un modèle de bioraffinerie produisant des salicylates à haute valeur pour des applications médicales. Les résidus d'écorce et la pulpe pure seront transformés en matériaux pour l’emballage de qualité alimentaire, alternative aux plastiques dérivés des produits fossiles. Les résidus de production seront hydrolysés et utilisés dans des systèmes innovants de digestion anaérobie, fournissant du biogaz adapté à l'injection sur réseau. Les démonstrations valideront comment l’intégration technologique accroît l’efficacité et la qualifient en meilleure pratique disponible. Une analyse approfondie du marché, réglementaire, financière, technique et environnementale produira une «boîte à outils» à diffuser à tous les acteurs du marché via un vaste programme de communication. L'objectif du projet est de permettre une bioraffinerie sans déchet et de fournir un plan détaillé pour une économie circulaire durable à faible émission de carbone. L'approche favorisera l'émergence d'bioéconomie compétitive dans la région qui profitera aux PME en rassemblant toutes les parties prenantes de la chaîne de valeur pour remédier systématiquement au manque d’usines de référence et aux risques perçus, et promouvoir la réplication commerciale.
