Achievements (EN):

The project Kantele Goes Global! Ground Zero was cooperation project between two institutes in the Republic of Karelia, the Budgetary Institution «The Karelian National Song and Dance Ensemble Kantele» (original Lead Partner from 2019 – beginning of 2022) and Municipal public institution of additional education "National School of Arts of Pryazha district" and two institutes in Finland, the University of Eastern Finland and Runosong Academy (Runolaulu-Akatemian kannatusyhdistys ry – the Substitute Lead Partner from March 2022 till October 2023). The specific objective was to increase diversity of kantele music and its presentation to the public with new forms of cross-border activities. Project was running very well in the beginning. Several master courses and concert tours were held, both in Finland and in Karelian Republic. During the second year, in 2020 Covid19 changed many of the project activities. Some had to be postponed and changed into remote operations. Quite many were still implemented by now innovative manner. When it seemed that even 2021 was hampered by the Covid 19. Main part of events was held within the country – both in Finland and in the Republic of Karelia. Some of the resources were appointed to the modernisation of chromatic kantele. Design and production of three new instruments were ordered from the Koistinen Kantele Ltd in Finland. In the beginning of 2022 Russian invasion to Ukraine changed the whole project dramatically. After some months of confusion, Runosong Academy was appointed as Substitute Lead Partner, and the rest of the remaining activities were implemented only in Finland. After all, most of the project work was made in 2019-2021, and only a small part was left to the last one and a half years. In all, the project organised over 30 events, master courses and music labs, more than 10 TV-podcasts, numerous video concerts, published three different YouTube channels and produced new kantele music sheets from various composers and musicians.

Expected Results (EN):

Kantele music will become more diverse and interesting for listeners (local residents and tourists alike) on both sides of the border. New cultural niches for kantele music will be identified and tested, which should lead to wider presence of kantele in cultural life. Likewise, kantele will be much better presented and promoted in social networks, and especially in video-sharing platforms. Touring activity of kantele players will be intensified, and their musical skills will be enriched with new kantele playing techniques. A strategy for kantele's international promotion in the next decade will be defined. Finally, the project will enable Russian kantele players to acquire much-needed advanced musical instruments.

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. New Finnish-Russian Kantele Music Programme is produced and shown to the public. This Programme will significantly diversify the existing kantele repertoire. 2. Three tours of Finnish-Russian kantele team presenting our new Programme are conducted. 3. 40-50 video clips presenting the Programme are published and promoted in video-sharing platforms. 4. 120-130 kantele players and teachers of kantele have acquired new kantele playing skills and techniques. 5. 70-80 school children have learned new kantele playing styles and acquired skills of music composing and improvisation. 6. Research report on international experiences in ethnic music promotion and development is published. 7. Research report on new cultural niches for kantele music is published. 8. International Kantele Promotion Action Plan for 2021-2030 is published. 9.The project is managed efficiently, and its commonication and visibility goals are reached.
