Description (EN): Increasing cross-border business activities and cooperation of SMEs in forest sector.

Description (FI): Hankkeen yleinen tavoite on tukea kasvavaa pienten ja keskisuurten yritysten rajanylittävää liiketoimintaa. Erityistavoitteena on lisätä metsäsektorin pienten ja keskisuurten yritysten rajanylittävää liiketoimintaa ja yhteistyötä.

Achievements (EN):

The project aimed to produce results that would benefit Finnish forestry companies and entrepreneurs. It specifically addressed the theme of foreign forestry labor, which was identified as highly topical for business development in a survey of Finnish forest sector SMEs. To promote the prerequisites for recruiting foreign forestry labor, the project focused on producing Russian-language training materials for forest workers. These materials aimed to orient Russian-speaking forest workforce to Finnish forest management principles and practices. The selection of topics for the materials was based on a needs assessment conducted in the early stages of the project. The project's final report highlighted the key results of the needs survey among Finnish forestry SMEs and provided insights into the regional forest labor situation in the Karelia CBC program region of Finland. In addition, the report examined the broader labor situation in forestry, and work quality issues. In terms of practical instructions and guides, the project developed printed and electronic training materials providing practical guidance to Finnish forestry companies in recruiting and integrating Russian-speaking forest workforce. Furthermore, the project explored the use of drones in forestry operations. It identified and analyzed potential use cases for drones and tested drone imaging for data collection. The most promising use cases, containing innovative approaches for future service development, were published as part of the project's results.

Expected Results (EN):

The forest cluster SMEs will become aware of possibilities for cooperation, as well as supply and demand for services behind the border. Preconditions for increasing cross-border trade will be favorable due to new business models. Advanced knowledge on intensive forestry will be transferred to practice effectively. Cross-border trade of knowledge intensive services, products and technologies will increase. Companies are utilizing modern technologies in daily operations for effective forest use and protection. Forest cluster cross-border cooperation is extended to SMEs and created network will form a starting point for cross-border business cluster. The positive atmosphere will attract the young generation to stay in the region when working possibilities are provided by a cluster.In Karelia preconditions, possibilities and benefits of intensive forestry will be evident for companies, and Finnish experience is applied to the full extent. The intensive forest management practices improve the profitability and sustainability of forestry, as forestry operations are concentrated on a smaller geographical territory and the untouched forest areas can be preserved. The project purpose is in line with the Rural Policy Programme 2014-2020 with the main attention on the better business networks. The new solutions developed within the project will cause increasing employment and development of the local SMEs. The project BOFORI makes it possible for the Republic of Karelia and the North Karelia to be more attractive for investments into forest sector.

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. Business model for cross-border forestry services. Including export of Finnish forestry services to Russia and importing services/products from Karelia to Finland. 2. Knowledge intensive services under common brand. Training packages in the framework of the Petrozavodsk training center of practical competences including activities in both sides of the border. 3. New service for producing up to date and precise information about state and changes of forest areas based on modern technologies and specific needs of companies and forest owners on both sides of the border.
