Получение новых знаний и повышение уровня осведомленности о факторах окружающей среды, контролирующих урожайность недревесных продуктов леса (НПЛ) и содержание в них химических соединений, способствующих укреплению здоровья, на протяжении всего жизненного цикла лесов, вовлеченных в лесохозяйственную деятельность.

Description (EN): Increasing knowledge and awareness on the environmental factors controlling yields and health-promoting compounds of non-wood forest products (NWFP; berries and other valuable plant species) during the life cycle of managed forests.

Description (FI): ECODIVE-projektin tavoitteena on lisätä tietoa ja tietoisuutta ympäristötekijöistä, jotka säätelevät metsien luonnontuotteiden satoisuutta ja niiden sisältämien funktionaalisten yhdisteiden pitoisuuksia.

Achievements (EN):

The specific objective of ECODIVE project was increased knowledge and awareness on the environmental factors controlling yields and health-promoting compounds of wild forest berries and other non-timber forest products during the life cycle of managed forests. The project compiled existing knowledge and provided versatile new information especially on bilberry. As an end product of the project we published a science based audiovisual information package, which summarizes main results of working packages of the project amended with expert knowledge. The package consists of three infocards and six videos and is freely available at https://www.metsabiotalous.fi/muut/ecodive-informaatiopaketti-metsamarjoista/ . The infocards include information on the Finnish berry picking culture, properties of forests having potential to produce high yields of bilberry and lingonberry, and recommendations for forest management supporting berry production. In addition, an infocard deals with bilberry's anthocyanins and their potential to support human welfare. Youtube videos include bilberry fairytale for children (Mustikka Bistro, delivered also in Mappa.fi), and information on how to carry out monitoring of berry flowering and yields in the field, and how to enhance pollination services for wild forest berries. In addition, two youtube videos provide guidance on how to identify forest site types on mineral soil forest in the field. Research work of the project included 1) studies on the effect of environmental conditions and forest management regimes on non-timber forest products using existing datasets, 2) correspondence analysis of site type classification in Finland (Cajander) and in Russia (Sukatchev), 3) introduction to a novel approach for utilizing remote sensing data to map berry yield and identify berry hot spots, and 4) a study on how environmental conditions influence bilberry quality. Besides information package the main results are reported in scientific journals.The project results have been communicated in dissemination events, in press releases, and in media and social media.

Expected Results (EN):

1. Improved awareness on the effect of environmental conditions and forest management on NWFP and better possibilities for reconciliation of timber production with provision of NWFP. 2. Improved awareness on the potential yields of NWFP. 3. Improved awareness on the hot spots for wild berry picking in terms of best yields and highest contents of health promoting components. 4. Improved cross-border cooperation in science, education and between SMEs (ref. Euregio Karelia).

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. NONWOOD PACKAGE; a package of audiovisual teaching and information material produced (WP1). It summarizes current expertise knowledge and outputs of the working packages of the project, which are: 2. Criteria and indicators produced to describe properties of forests having high potential to produce forest berries and other valuable plant species. The whole life cycle of forest stand is considered. Accordingly, guidelines produced for collection of NWFP: what plant species may be used and in what type and age of forests they may be found (WP2 and WP3). 3. Yield models constructed to describe production potential of bilberry and lingonberry in forests of the programme region (WP3). 4. Recommendations on how to manage forests in order to reconcile production of NWFP with timber production compiled (WP2 and WP3). 5. Maps presenting locations of areas with potential for high yields of forest berries and other valuable plant species delivered (WP4). 6. Information produced on conditions bringing highest contents of health-promoting compounds in bilberries and lingonberries (WP5).
