Achievements (EN):

WasteLess Karelias has focused on improving waste management in rural villages in North-Karelia (FI) and the Karelian Republic (RU) to improve living conditions in rural places and to provide a cleaner living environment for their residents. Through an interactive approach that proactively integrated local residents, activists and institutional stakeholders as well as entrepreneurs in waste management related trainings, planning, and activities WasteLess Karelias project has encouraged these stakeholders to act on improving the local waste management system and to create a cleaner rural living environment. Based on surveys and visual assessments the project explored the local waste situations, stakeholder perceptions and knowledge, and the potentials of waste prevention and recycling in 5 rural villages. Based on the results of these assessments WasteLess Karelias project worked pro-actively with local stakeholders in establishing improved waste collection and sorting facilities in all 5 pilot villages. Altogether the project initiated and supported the construction of eight collection points for mixed and sorted waste in its pilot villages. In Russian villages the establishment of sorting stations was a novum as no sorting possibilities in rural areas existed prior to the project. Improving the local infrastructure was accompanied by arranging a series of local waste management workshops, trainings, clean-up events, village evenings, trash-art workshops, and the employment of a CO2 calculator tool to visualize the climate benefits of local waste management. The project further had a particular focus on environmental education of school children and more than 2000 pupils participated in project activities such as lectures, clean-ups, but also innovative forms of awareness rising like trash-art workshops, a cross-border school competition and interactive science theatre performances. Finally, WasteLess Karelias project actively promoted the reuse of goods and collected a set of product care stories to disseminate and exemplify the values and potential longevity of products. It further produced WasteLess action plans for Finnish rural villages. These can guide other villages on their pathway to a cleaner environment based on the examples derived from the project villages. These interactive stories, documents and all other project results have been collected in a WasteLess Story portal (https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/7136b1ef71404dbcaef170b59619c907) able to disseminate and portray the vast array of project results and activities in a visual and textual form. The project culminated in a Trash-Art festival on Joensuu market square gathering more than 600 participants. During the project duration from December 2018 to August 2022 more than 3000 persons have been actively participating in WasteLess Karelias project activities and more than 6000 persons have been reached by the various project outcomes.

Expected Results (EN):

- Based on increased awareness and training, landscapes in the target villages are cleaner and visible littering is significantly reduced in comparison to the current situation. - Possibilities for waste sorting and recycling facilities are identified in each target village and they are familiar to residents. - Permanent and free-time residents in the target villages have access to waste sorting facilities and possess awareness, sorting skills and knowledge on the negative impacts of littering. - Village residents and authorities are aware of WasteLess online tools and are able to exchange information with other communities and experts on both sides of the border.

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. Awareness of the existing possibilities and facilities for waste prevention, sorting and recycling are increased. 2. Access to waste sorting facilities is enabled and waste sorting in households and public buildings is increased. 3. Readiness to implement waste legislation and to adopt sustainable waste management practices is established.
