Achievements (EN):

The project targeted creating a sustainable, interoperable and open data and knowledge exchange network between Finnish and Karelian government officials, researchers and citizen (NGOs), to tackle threats posed by invasive alien species (IAS). The objective of the project was to increase the knowledge about problems, prevention and eradication methods of invasive alien species to the people, organizations and government officials on both sides of the border. DIAS project built a bilateral invasive alien species (IAS) expert network that shares knowledge and expertise on best practices and effective measures to control and eradicate IAS. During the project a new IAS portal was established in Russian Karelia. The portal contains information on 42 invasive alien species. Species cards contain information about the species’ distribution in Karelia, its biological characteristics, images. There are also separate sections for Pests in forestry, Pests in agriculture and Synanthropic species. With relevant species, there is also with a link to the Finnish IAS portal (vieraslajit.fi). Photo gallery and species observations map with data derived from gbif.org website is linked to species cards. Simultaneously the Finnish IAS web portal was updated, and the project expertise could be used in development work. Material (a book, flyers, websites, blogs, videos, information cards, and best practices material) regarding identification, control and eradication of IAS was produced and everything is freely available trough the IAS web portals. A questionary investigating the IAS knowledge of the public was conducted, and the results are also published to be found as a reference later. Due to the covid-19 pandemic new ways of conducting eradication campaigns was piloted. This solo eradication campaign was successful in both spreading information on IAS but also in effectively eradicating IA plant species in Finland. Also, in Karelia the eradication events were held partly remotely: local television showed a footage about IAS eradication event, and a series of interview articles about invasive species was also published on the website, portal and social networks.

Expected Results (EN):

The mechanisms and protocols between Finland and Russian Karelia will be created in dealing with IAS. Importantly, the aim is also to align these actions with the EU policy and also to help local officials on both sides of the border to create joint risk assessments for most important species, communicate future potential risk species (both alien and invasive species) and create management guidelines. This project will focus on most acute issues on terrestrial and aquatic invasive species, animal spread diseases (zoonosis), agricultural and forestry pests. All activities and mechanisms will rely on having a joint information base, assessments and actions, but the mechanisms and network activity, once established, will continue after the project ends.

Expected Outputs (EN):

1. Ict-infrastructure for knowledge and data exchange is constructed or updated. 2. Best practices for management of invasive alien species are developed collaboratively. 3. The knowledge exchange and eradication methods are tested in practice to collect more data and update Best Practises to ensure continuity of collaboration.
