Achievements (EN):

The project aimed to improve the preservation of cross-border forest biodiversity and reduce the risks of loss of high forest biodiversity sites from forest fires along the Finnish-Russian border. The project successfully developed forest fire risk models applicable in Finland and Russia, based on remote sensing data. The models were able to forecast the time and location of the highest risk areas along the Finnish-Russian border and were combined with an online map of cross-border forest biodiversity sites to monitor and share information among actors involved in biodiversity conservation and forest fire monitoring in both countries. The project also collected geospatial information on the current state of biodiversity "hotspots" in the border regions of Finland and Russia and evaluated the state of connectivity among them, resulting in the map of current biodiversity hotspots and existing connectors in the form of an online GIS and mobile application. The new knowledge obtained during the project implementation and the new tools developed within the project were disseminated through cross-border training webinars and an online platform for the network of actors involved in cross-border forest biodiversity preservation (https://biodivers.fi/). The main achievements of the project included the development of a cross-border forest fire forecasting model, an online map of cross-border forest biodiversity sites, online tools for forest fire forecasting, new approaches of UAV usage in forest fires and biodiversity monitoring, cross-border webinars on forest biodiversity management, and an online platform for the network of actors involved in cross-border forest biodiversity preservation. The project successfully met its objective of improving the preservation of cross-border forest biodiversity and mitigating the risks of forest fires to high biodiversity sites.

Expected Results (EN):

The map of current state of biodiversity “hotspots” and analysis of connectivity would allow evaluating current status of biodiversity preservation in border areas. The risks of biodiversity loss due to the forest fires and wood harvesting will be assessed. Society would not support the idea of stopping wood harvesting, but it is possible to reduce the forest cover loss due to the forest fires. The new models, online tools, new methods, new cooperation networks would allow to reduce the number and area of forest fires in border area and indirectly support the biodiversity of border area. Establishing communication platform between the stakeholders would guarantee practical application of project results and utilization after the end of the project. Project implementation would reduce the risks and scale of possible cross-border forest fires.
