Description (EN):

The overall objective of the project is to increase cross-border economic interaction and trade by improving tourism SMEs’ capability to create cross-border services for international tourists. Thus, the aim of the project is to improve SMEs’ capability by activating SMEs, encouraging for networking, training to create joint services, piloting them, and informatively fostering cross-border SME collaboration in the field of tourism industry. By visualizing new tourism services possibilities based on the regions’ attractiveness and cooperation, the project enables strengthening of tourism industry in Oulu region, Kainuu, and Russian Karelia.

Achievements (EN):

TourSME helped to establish new connections between Russian and Finnish tourism entrepreneurs, the project participants developed new tourist packages to be easily reachable and found for international tourists. Even though the Covid-19 pandemic set several challenges and it was not possible to cross the border during the project, the project partners showed great resilience and all the project aims were otherwise reached. Various webinars and training events have been organized for entrepreneurs, from which they had the opportunity to gain new information and tools for the development of tourism products, cross-border cooperation and operating in international markets. In addition to these, the main activities have been Mobile Camps, where entrepreneurs are brought together in workshops for brainstorming and working on new tourism products. Various experts and project staff have been involved in the events to support the work and provide feedback. The project resulted in new cross-border travel packages suitable for the international tourism market. In addition, entrepreneurs formed a network of cooperation between the tourist areas of Northern Ostrobothnia, Kainuu, and the Republic of Karelia, which enables long-term cooperation and development. In the future when the border is open again, all this will help in the development of cross-border tourism between Russia and Finland.

Expected Results (EN):

As an expected result, the project will raise SMEs’ awareness about tourism potential on both sides of border, and also knowledge on Finnish and Russian Karelian tourism actors and their existing services. The increased awareness and knowledge enables fruitful cooperation utilizing unique opportunities of cross-border tourism to bring international and domestic tourists into the regions. Moreover, SMEs operating in other related industries, such as agriculture, are encouraged to start part-time tourism operations, and thus will enrichen the industry structure. It can be estimated, based on earlier experience that other sectors gain 56 additional cents from every euro used in tourism services. Additionally, the capability of the SMEs of the cross-border tourism business is growing to run the cross-border tourism effectively.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Expected outputs are: 1. SMEs' knowledge of cross-border tourism potential and their networking have increased. 2. SMEs’ are trained to create attractive cross-border tourism services for international tourists. 3. SMEs pilot together in order to create cross-border tourism services for international tourists. 4. Tourism potential with SME business possibilities of Oulu region, Kainuu and Russian Karelia reach the broader audience and authorities.
