Description (EN): The objective of the project is to increase business and interaction in wellness service sector across the Karelian border.

Achievements (EN):

The main goal for the Karelian Wellness project was developing and strengthening cross-border cooperation between Eastern Finland and the Republic of Karelia. The aim was to provide market research reports, workshops, seminars and networking events that increase wellness tourism companies' and enterprises know-how and co-operation with fellow companies. In the Finland project activities targeted to companies in North Karelia, North Savo and Kainuu regions. In the Republic of Karelia the entrepreneurs and organizations in tourism and service sectors from the districts of Petrozavodsk, Sortavala, Kondopoga and Pudozh participated in the project activities The global Covid-19 pandemic that began just after first months of the project brought some difficulties and unexpected obstacles to the project plan. Pandemic heavily hit to project partner companies’ and it was challenging to get them to join and commit project activities. After the spring 2021 companies’ interest to the project increased because confidence to the future rise as well. Project activities, such as training, workshops and development tasks based on service design could be implemented. Because crossing border was restricted measures were taken separately on both sides of the border or online if possible. Responsibilities in of project divided between all organizations. Karelia UAS and Savonia UAS project staff implemented development processes that utilize service design, University of Eastern Finland and Petrozavodsk State University carrying out wellness service-related research and Petrozavodsk City Administration is contacting wellness related entrepreneurs of Republic of Karelia. The project aim of increasing the know-how of wellness related companies was completed succesfully. The most permanent result was three different studies and guidebook for wellness related entrepreneurs. The guidebook was published in Finnish (printed & digital version) and in Russian (digital version only) languages. During the project external experts as well as peer-to-peer learning between project partners have increase the effectiveness of project. Project helped entrepreneurs to create or update the wellness related services or products. Totally 27 companies take a part on product development process diring the project. The project also carried out trainings were companies increase compmetence of digital marketing, service design as well as developing new wellness related together. Project ended in May 2022. Because of the started by the Russian in February in Ukraine there was no cross-border cooperation with Russian partners after March 2022. In the last months, measures were implemented only in Finland.

Expected Results (EN):

The overall benefits of the project will be high level of service quality, instruments for creating new products and services, cross-border networking of wellness service companies, increased consciousness on service design, and new effective marketing instruments used by entrepreneurs of wellness services.Effective networking methods and cooperation between Finnish and Russian entrepreneurs will increase the opportunities to develop best cross-border practices together, and marketing will be improved, increasing cross-border customer flow. In addition to cross-border cooperation, the project diversifies the synergy possibilities between wellness service enterprises and entrepreneurs producing goods that wellness enterprises can tap on production of services. The project implementation will increase cross-border interaction and trade. Enterprises working with wellness services take part to activities that increase the capacity of enterprises to start economic cooperation. The project will increase the profits of enterprises; grow tax revenues and general welfare of the particular region.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main outputs the project will produce: 1. Identified current state, barriers and regional resources of wellness services in North Karelia, North Savo, Kainuu and the Republic of Karelia. The list of local specialties of wellness tourism and services that increases regions´ attractiveness. 2. Sustainable instruments for customer based service design for wellness service products for regions entrepreneurs. 3. Increased cooperation between wellness service companies on both sides of the border. 4. Increased customer based service skills such as marketing know-how, customer experience and cross-cultural communication skills.
