Description (EN):

The overall objective of the project is the improved living and working environment in the Karelia CBC Programme area. The main objective of PeatStop is improved runoff water management via monitoring and new filter solutions. More specifically, PeatStop aims at the development of transboundary solutions to improve the condition of urban water bodies through the introduction of effective monitoring and the use of new environmentally safe runoff water filtering solutions.

Achievements (EN):

The proposed project PeatStop responded to the specific element for improving the people’s physical living environment by providing a solution suitable for filtering runoff water in the proximity of urban areas. The solution enables decreasing the environmental load and emission of contaminants to waterbodies to reduce the environmental load to water reservoirs (lakes, ponds, rivers) caused by unfiltered runoff water and related contaminants from urban settlements. Water reservoirs located within the boundaries of populated areas are often exposed to the anthropogenic impact from polluted surface runoff, which leads to their pollution. The coastal zones where water and population come into contact are most heavily polluted. Often, water bodies that receive contaminated runoff are sources of water supply, which can adversely affect the health of the population. Usually lakes, ponds and other water reservoirs are also important recreational areas increasing city inhabitants wellbeing via comfort of living. According to original project plan, two important reservoirs, lake Onega and lake Kaupunginlampi, located in the central places of Kajaani and Petrozavodsk were selected as pilot sites. Both reservoirs are receivers of runoff water and undergo a negative change: eutrophication, pollution by heavy metals, oil products, organic pollution, etc. Collaboration with RU was suspended due to Russian invasion in Ukraine 2/22, after which project has been continuing as FI/EU-project. During the project, comprehensive mapping for runoff water quality features in target areas was carried out and published as a report via Karelia CBC project portal. Design for pilot instalments were made and implemented in Kajaani. Three permanent/long-term installations took place; nature-based settlement pond, wooden biofiltration barrier "riukupato" and microplastic removal filters. One temporary 10-week pilot for nutrient uptake with absorption was implemented in runoff water stream. Short-term demonstrations for added oxygenation to support ecological recovery of waterbodies was carried out. New mobile app for citizen science / participatory observation water environmental issues was developed and tested. All together, project had a very remarkable role to support the paradigm shift concerning runoff water management; from flooding prevention into more comprehensive management taking into account water quality features and related environmental load prevention.

Expected Results (EN):

During the project novel runoff water filters are built in both participating cities, Petrozavodsk and Kajaani. The runoff water filtering solutions are passive and permanent structures, which stay in operation with very low maintenance needs also after the project. The long-term maintenance procedure and responsibilities for both pilot sites are defined as a part of the project, since very often the lack of understanding for maintenance needs decreases the capacity in the long run. Disseminating the experience and results of these pilots supports the initiation of similar development and investments in cities throughout the Karelia CBC area.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main outputs of the project will produce 1. Runoff water environmental load monitoring report from Petrozavodsk and Kajaani, which summarizes the results for monitoring. 2. Runoff water filtering solutions are designed responding to monitoring results and local requirements. 3. Runoff water pilot filters in Petrozavodsk and Kajaani are built and are in use. 4. Communication material is produced and is used in active dissemination around the programme area.
