Description (EN):

The territories involved in ADRIONET are filled with small authentic villages, often situated in remarkably beautiful locations, including fluvial basins, mountains, hills, rural peripheral or marginal areas, in certain cases at risk of depopulation and abandonment, due to spatial territorial development models characterized by intense urbanization and socio-economic polarization. These villages represent an asset of primary social, cultural and environmental relevance, a deposit of local micro-histories and identities, productive knowhow, food traditions and so on, that should be more clearly and intensively involved in regional strategies and actions of preservation and valorisation, through models of sustainable settlement that enhance existing cultural and natural heritage (and related landscapes). Main project change is to overcome current marginalization, fragmentation and under-valorisation of these territories by setting up a Transnational Network of “Authentic Villages”, aimed at promoting a preservation of natural and cultural assets by pursuing a development based on social, environmental and economical sustainability, with at the centre the quality of life and wellness of local populations, as pre-condition for a pervasive care of landscapes concerned as well as of attraction and satisfaction of visitors. All this will be integrated in the innovative concept of “hospitable community”, in which a community itself takes over the role of engine of local development and of organizer, around its resources and values, of a diffused hospitality. To achieve this, a Transnational Action Plan is designed as a roadmap and models for setting up “authentic villages” are defined. Pilot Actions will test common solutions of territorial enhancement based on “authentic village” models. Transnational cooperation will enable small scattered villages of the ADRION region to be networked and assume transnational visibility.

Achievements (EN):

In the Adriatic-Ionian region one discovers pieces of paradise in small villages located in remarkable beautiful places between mountains, lakes or rivers. Those treasures are part of the social, cultural and environmental value of the region, especially due to their local micro-stories mirroring the richness in terms of traditions and history. However, those villages remain often -metaphorically and literally- hidden in hills, rural peripheral or marginal areas, facing the risk of depopulation and abandonment. The Interreg ADRION project ADRIONET aims to overcome their current marginalization through joint activities and actions carried out with the aim of enhancing their cultural capital and support their promotion in the tourism sector. To respond to the challenges of current marginalization, fragmentation and under-valorisation of these territories, ADRIONET has established: A Transnational Network of “Authentic Villages” with the role to promote social, environmental and economical sustainability of these areas with a specific emphasis on the preservation of landscapes and on the attraction of visitors Local pilot actions and visits to the villages to raise awareness about the value of the territories Authentic village platform where partners collect documents and information concerning topics such as integrated territorial enhancement, regeneration of rivers, lake basins, or marginal and peripheral areas. Find out more about the platform: https://authenticvillages.com/ ADRIONET partners organized meetings in the authentic villages of each territory in order to implement a set of actions defined jointly with local stakeholders. Addressed actions concerned both improvement to the physical conditions of these places (such as low consumption of public lighting, recovery of rainwater for domestic use and irrigation), and promotion to the local businesses, cultural and artistic handicraft. Activites involved all local actors working in the sector of hospitality, accommodation and tourism at large. Moreover, a special focus was given to youth enterpreneurship.

Expected Results (EN): Level of capacity for the stakeholders in the fields of natural and cultural heritage protection and tourism to sustainably valorise natural and cultural heritage as a growth asset.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Based on the “authentic villages” concept (which aims to the overall improvement of social, cultural and environmental resources in small towns), the expected ADRIONET’s main result is the trigger of a multi-level plurality of institutions involved (regional authorities, regional development agencies and local governments of small villages) and multi-stakeholders (local communities and various social, economic and cultural actors) in a process of territorial enhancement of fragile and vulnerable territories, with the aim of the preservation and sustainable valorisation of natural and cultural assets through soft solutions like the promotion of slow and green tourism. The pre-condition of all will be the achievement of the local communities’ wellness, and hence the retention of inhabitants (first of all of young people) in the territories concerned, as custodians of landscape maintenance, local cultures and traditions etc. The local communities will be transformed, through the consistent activities designed by the project, in “authentic villages”, who will then be structured and networked in the expected transnational Network of authentic villages. ADRIONET is thought as a coherent result-oriented process, that during its implementation, step by step, will enhance the level of capacity for the stakeholders touched by it (public authorities, local producers, single citizens, new figures like the “territorial mediators” etc.) in the selected fields of natural and cultural heritage protection and tourism, to sustainable valorise the natural and cultural heritage/landscape as a growth assets.
