Sudoe regions have hundreds of small and medium-size agglomerations operating in rural areas where the management and treatment of wastewaters still follows past needs, when the only priority was to guarantee the quality of water discharges. Additionally, the digital explosion that is experiencing the water field with the deployment of smart technologies in cities is increasing the technology gap between the urban and rural environments. CircRural 4.0 proposes a radical transformation of wastewater treatment in the rural areas, according to a new depuration concept based on the efficient use of the resources. With this approach, wastewater management in rural areas will become energetically self-sufficient and will make it possible the recovery of essential nutrients like phosphorous. For this purpose, current treatment plants will have to implement novel intelligent control and advanced data analysis technologies.

El espacio Sudoe cuenta con centenares de pequeñas y medianas poblaciones localizadas en entornos rurales en las que la gestión y depuración del agua residual siguen aún respondiendo a necesidades del pasado, cuando la única prioridad era garantizar la calidad de las aguas tratadas. Por otro lado, en lo que se refiere a la digitalización del sector del agua, el impulso al desarrollo de ciudades inteligentes ha acentuado la brecha tecnológica entre los mundos urbano y rural. CircRural 4.0 propone una transformación radical del tratamiento del agua residual en zonas rurales acorde a una nueva concepción de la depuración fundamentada en el uso eficiente de recursos. Con ello se persigue que la gestión del agua residual en el ámbito rural pase a ser energéticamente suficiente y que además posibilite la recuperación de nutrientes esenciales como el fósforo. Esto implicará dotar las actuales depuradoras con tecnologías de control inteligente y de análisis avanzado de datos.

Expected Results (EN):

None of the technologies and solutions proposed in this project are currently present in rural areas of the Sudoe territories. Existing oxidation ditches are provided with very basic control systems that do not allow biological phosphorous removal to be achieved. There are not automatic control technologies to specifically undertake phosphorous removal. There are not software tools either that, such as proposed in this project, take advantage of the so-called technologies 4.0 to assist in making decisions about the whole management of all the wastewater treatment plants. Finally, the installation of centralized treatment technologies to both obtain methane and recover phosphorous from a combined processing of the sludge produced in the wastewater treatment plants and wastes produced in agro-food industries is also absolutely innovative for the rural regions in southwestern Europe.

Expected Results (ES):

Ninguna de las tecnologías y soluciones propuestas en el proyecto está siendo actualmente aplicada en las zonas rurales del espacio Sudoe. Por un lado, los diques de oxidación cuentan con sistemas de control muy básicos con los cuales no es factible la eliminación biológica de fósforo. No existen tecnologías de control automático que acometan específicamente la eliminación de fósforo. Tampoco existen herramientas software de apoyo que faciliten a partir de la centralización y análisis de datos las tareas de gestión y mantenimiento de todas las plantas depuradoras en su conjunto. Por último, la implantación de tecnologías de tratamiento centralizado que hagan posible la obtención de gas metano y la recuperación de fósforo a partir de una gestión conjunta de los fangos producidos en las depuradoras y de los residuos orgánicos producidos por industrias agro-alimentarias es también absolutamente novedoso en las regiones rurales del sudoeste europeo.
