Open mountain spaces in the SUDOE region are immersed in the processes of global change that affect most of the planet. Rural depopulation, the reduction of grazing and the abandonment of traditional land uses are causing a loss of biodiversity, an homogenization of the landscapes and an accumulation of lignified fuels, which lead to a high risk of wildfires, aggravated by the more intense heat waves and droughts occurring in the last decades. The project aims to establish and validate regional models of preservation of high value open spaces in mountain areas of the SUDOE region by using a combination of controlled fires and guided grazing. The project joins traditional knowledge on these tools with current, scientific and technical developments, in order to increase the efficacy and potential of these environmental-friendly practices, and proposes economical viable inputs for their regional implementation.

Los espacios abiertos de montaña en la región SUDOE están inmersos en los procesos de cambio global que afectan a la mayor parte del planeta. La despoblación rural, la reducción del pastoreo y el abandono de los usos tradicionales de la tierra están causando la pérdida de la biodiversidad, la homogeneización de los paisajes y la acumulación de combustibles lignificados, lo que conduce a un alto riesgo de incendios forestales, agravado por las olas de calor más intensas y sequías ocurridas en los últimos años. El objetivo del proyecto es establecer y validar modelos regionales de preservación de espacios abiertos de alto valor en áreas montañosas de la región SUDOE utilizando una combinación de incendios controlados y pastoreo guiado. El proyecto une el conocimiento tradicional sobre estas herramientas con los desarrollos actuales, científicos y técnicos, con el fin de aumentar la eficacia y el potencial de estas prácticas amigables con el medio ambiente, y propone aportes económicos viables para su implementación regional.

Les espaces de montagne ouverts de la région SUDOE sont immergés dans les processus de changement global qui affectent la majeure partie de la planète. Le dépeuplement des zones rurales, la réduction des pâturages et l'abandon des utilisations traditionnelles des terres entraînent une perte de biodiversité, une homogénéisation des paysages et une accumulation de combustibles lignifiés, ce qui entraîne un risque élevé d'incendies de forêt, aggravé par les vagues de chaleur plus intenses et sécheresses survenues au cours des dernières décennies. Le projet vise à établir et à valider des modèles régionaux de préservation d'espaces ouverts de grande valeur dans les zones de montagne de la région de SUDOE en combinant des feux contrôlés et un pâturage guidé. Le projet associe les connaissances traditionnelles sur ces outils aux développements scientifiques et techniques actuels, afin d'accroître l'efficacité et le potentiel de ces pratiques respectueuses de l'environnement, et propose des intrants économiques viables pour leur mise en œuvre régionale.
