Southwestern Europe is threatened by forest fires, which are fostered due to the social, economic and climate changes. The biodiversity, soils and eco-systemic services are resources directly affected, in relation with both fires and waters, which generate added risks such as water pollution, droughts, infrastructure damages, loss of harvest or loss of productivity. Opportunities to stabilize in an effective way the affected areas are very reduced regarding time and resources, especially in case of fires, and anticipated responses are crucial to optimize the benefits of posterior emergency actions. EPyRIS provides a joint management strategy to tackle the risks generated by forest fires in SUDOE’s natural areas. It consolidates, harmonizes and uses criteria, procedures and contributions from the scientist sector for its use in the management. More specifically, the project aims at providing anticipated vulnerability assessment of those risks, optimizing the post fire emergency procedures and capitalizing the scientific knowledge in the management. For this purpose, the project uses a transnational inclusive focus with the participation of implicated actors in the management at different levels (national, regional/local, etc.) to get agreed criterion and to facilitate the cooperation between managers in peculiar realities to deal with a shared problem. The use of public data infrastructures and interoperability standards are key to guarantee an harmonized and adapted implementation to the needs of every manager, according to the territory’s peculiarities.

Expected Results (EN):

Set of innovative planning operations which guarantees the optimum decision-making in the SUDOE natural areas management, in particular those more vulnerable to forest fires. This set will enable the mitigation of the erosive risk, the loss of soil’s productive capacities, the loss of habitats and landscape and its capitalization through management tools. Joint Strategy, protocols and application models; Tools for implementation: SIG tools, public data exploitation, interoperability software.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Determination of potential vulnerability of erosion process in areas affected by fires: public report and software prototypes (tools for the implementation of a joint strategy) Methodology and implementation in module of SW prototype for the immediate diagnosis of the fire’s severity and the post-fire risks based on the information of a satellite validated in the field. Methodology for the rapid evaluation of the severity on the vegetal cover and soil, to be applied in the quantitative estimation of post-fire risks at the level of mountains. Directive lines to apply measures of stabilization and techniques of vegetal cover’s recuperation. SW tool for the preventive and post-risk analysis, prioritizing of areas and selection of stabilization and recuperation techniques in burnt natural areas.
