Where? Coastal zones are at the frontline of sustainability challenges; arising from the exploitation of natural resources such as fish stocks, loss of cultural heritage, changing demographics, waste disposal, and climate change impacts. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Northern Periphery and Arctic (NPA). The coast is one of the most significant unifying habitats in the region. What? It is imperative to build the resilience of coastal communities around the world, and in the Arctic and northern periphery in particular. The project will provide a roadmap for protecting, promoting and developing the cultural and natural heritage of sparsely populated and remote coastal communities. Local authorities play a pivotal role in enabling resilience building and coastal sustainability. The project will produce a COAST Toolbox for local authorities, focusing on SMART Blue Growth, which is based on principles of sustainability, mitigation, planning, adaptation, resilience and transition. How? COAST-project seeks to establish the NPA region as a demonstration of how to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the coast. The project brings together five partners and six associate partners from Iceland, Finland, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. The approach includes four demonstration cases, addressing the challenges of sparsely populated, remote coastal communities. Each case is strongly supported through the partners, associates and letters of support, to ensure effective delivery and implementation at the local authority level. COAST applies a three step conceptual framework called Our Coastal Futures, designed to: i) Enable regional stakeholders and institutions to develop a common understanding of future coastal scenarios. ii) Craft robust strategies for charting a desired coastal future. iii) Create mechanism to achieve these desired outputs.

Expected Results (EN): Preparedness of responsible authorities in remote, sparsely populated areas for environmental management in relation to climate change and impacts of new investments in exploitation of natural resources.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main output will be a Sustainable Resilient Coasts Toolbox to aid local authorities to build capacity towards sustainable coastal development. This will include a suite of tools designed to assist local authorities in the region, to plan for, and manage, SMART Blue Growth. It will be presented according to a step by step approach to the application of the Coastal Futures methodology. Specific tools will include guidance on stakeholder mapping, scenario building, and practical uses of innovative technologies, including drones, for sustainable development. Significant value will be added by the incorporation of a reference guide arising from the four demonstration cases, providing practical insights from lessons learned. The Toolbox will be tested and built incrementally through the project and finally made available as an online resource. The project will have a positive impact on the programme result, - 'Preparedness of responsible authorities in remote, sparsely populated areas for environmental management in relation to climate change and impacts of new investments in the exploitation of natural resources'. The project will result in: - A shared understanding about coastal issues, problems, opportunities, potential pathways and transitions to sustainability. - A process of considering alternative coastal futures and then developing local action plans that can be implemented sequentially, reviewed and modified. - Increased engagement of local stakeholders through co-design of the project. - Access to a network of knowledge transfer and planning resources needed to strengthen the management of our shared coastlines. - A pragmatic process that can help to chart a course away from unsustainable practices towards more sustainable coastal futures.
