Face à la nécessité d’un usage responsable des ressources naturelles et culturelles, à la concurrence dans le secteur touristique et aux changements de comportements de consommation, les destinations méditerranéennes sont confrontées à: 1) Une demande d’amélioration de la qualité de l’offre. 2) Un besoin de renforcer les liens entre professionnels du tourisme et communautés locales. 3) La nécessité de communiquer auprès des visiteurs. La certification est un des dispositifs qui répond à ces enjeux et qui démontre l’engagement des destinations à suivre les principes du développement durable. Il s’agit d’un outil visant à l’amélioration de l’offre touristique et à la communication. L’objectif du projet est ainsi de développer des mécanismes visant à intégrer des labels durables dans les politiques touristiques, à l’échelle nationale, régionale et locale, et de proposer un appui pour les destinations dans les procédures de certification. Il ne s’agit pas de créer de nouveaux labels, mais de capitaliser sur les certifications existantes. Le projet vise aussi à répondre aux enjeux récents des destinations certifiées : besoin de reconnaissance, complémentarité avec les contenus générés par les utilisateurs et transformation digitale. Ces objectifs seront atteints grâce à des ateliers thématiques d’échange d’expériences, une plateforme en ligne de renforcement de capacités, une politique commune à l’échelle territoriale et un nouveau projet de règlement au niveau du Programme.

Due to the growing need for responsible use of natural and cultural resources, increasing competition in tourism sector and changing consumption patterns, Mediterranean destinations are facing: 1) constant demand to improve the quality of tourism offer, 2) need to strengthen cooperation between tourism providers and local community, and 3) necessity to communicate with the visitors. Tourism sustainability certification is one of the effective instruments which addresses these challenges and shows destination’s commitment to follow the principles of sustainable development. It is a tool for improvement of tourist offer, community building and marketing.In first implementation period LABELSCAPE partnership produced three important results for highlighting the relevance of sustainability labels in wider tourism policies and practices. First result is report "Sustainability standards in tourism" which provides overview of existing sustainability standards in tourism, with special focus on Global Sustainable Tourism Council standards, and explains the logic and importance of third-party auditing process of sustainable practices in tourism. Second result is "Database of active sustainable tourism certifications/labels for Mediterranean destinations, parks, sites and beaches" comprising active, viable and reliable labels in line with GSTC criteria. Third important result is "Methodological guidelines for organising EoE workshops" which introduces different methodologies of participatory processes in the workshops, where participants are more actively involved in the process and therefore more focused on searching solutions for themselves in their respective environment.In the first reporting period project partners prepared factsheets on their territories (where project territorial activities will be implemented) comprising description of development needs, expected policy changes, list of potential stakeholders involved in Territorial Working Group and expected impacts. First LABELSCAPE outputs are available on the project website (https://labelscape.interreg-med.eu), while day-to-day news are published on Twitter account. The presentation of the project in media via articles and press releases has already started. LABELSCAPE project is in full swing for the beginning and all partners are committed to follow project objectives.
