DestiMED PLUS is the next step on a journey to promote integrated planning in coastal tourism, where regional policymakers apply holistic policies that link tourism with conservation by putting in practice a concrete ICZM approach for ecotourism products in Med Protected Areas (PAs). For ecotourism to thrive, governance and legislation frameworks must be strengthened across the whole Med area. The project builds on the success of MEET and DestiMED, with the objective of supporting Med regions to strengthen the enabling conditions for ecotourism in their PAs. This includes enhancing cross-sectoral local and regional policies, improving integrated planning strategies, and providing stakeholders with effective training and tools to manage, measure, and promote ecotourism. DestiMED PLUS will establish a Med Ecotourism Consortium (MEC) of conservation and tourism actors from regional administrations which will work to capitalize on tools and strengthen policy frameworks for ecotourism. The MEC will allow regions to exchange best practices and develop an integrated ecotourism model for the Med that will be adopted by their territories and scaled up. Existing monitoring tools will be harmonized and an online learning platform produced, allowing local and regional authorities to measure sustainability and improve participatory governance, while also ensuring ecotourism benefits conservation in PAs located on islands and in sparsely populated areas.

DestiMED PLUS constitue la prochaine étape vers la planification intégrée du tourisme côtier, où les décideurs régionaux appliquent des politiques intégrées liant le tourisme à la conservation. Pour que l'écotourisme puisse prospérer, l'environnement favorable autour de la gouvernance et de la législation doit être renforcé dans l'ensemble de la région méditerranéenne. Le projet s'appuie sur le succès des initiatives MEET et DestiMED, dans le but d'aider régions méditerranéennes à renforcer un environnement propice à l'écotourisme dans leurs aires protégées. Cela comprend l'amélioration des politiques intersectorielles locales et régionales; l’amélioration des stratégies de planification intégrée; la mise à disposition d’une formation et d’outils (pour gérer, mesurer et promouvoir l'écotourisme). DestiMED PLUS mettra en place un Consortium Méditerranéen sur l’Écotourisme (MEC) composé d'acteurs de la conservation et du tourisme issus d'administrations régionales. Ce consortium permettra aux régions d’échanger leurs pratiques et d’élaborer un modèle d’écotourisme adopté par leurs territoires et au-delà. Les outils de suivi existants seront harmonisés et une plate-forme d'apprentissage en ligne sera créée permettant aux autorités locales et régionales de mesurer la durabilité de leur territoire et d'améliorer la gouvernance participative, tout en veillant à ce que l'écotourisme profite à la conservation des aires protégées situées sur des îles et dans des zones peu peuplées.

Achievements (EN):

During the last project semester partners made their efforts in order to complete activities and make for some of the delays experienced in previous periods due to the pandemic-related restrictions. In spite of the tight schedule, the partnership manage to complete most of the foreseen activities, to deliver all major outputs, and to substantially achieve the main objectives of the project. For several deliverables production went beyond expectations.Under WP1, during the first part of the semesters partners managed to ensure the completion of the transition between modules and to proceed to, and prepare for the final project phase.Project communication efforts were intensive, with several tools finalized, such as posters, case study video plus 9 short destination videos, two report cards, ecotourism impact report and ecotourism guidelines for tourism boards. The project was also very active in dissemination efforts: the partnership organized or participated in over 20 events, while familiarisation and press trips were organised in 8 pilot destinations, engaging potential package buyers and media. Under WP3, it was possible to complete the ecotourism package test cycle in all 9 pilot areas involved in the project, with the last protected area (in Lazio) successfuly completing the ecouturism package design and test process successfully. This allowed for testing of the tools developed by the project in all 9 pilot areas.The 5th and final period was marked by the finalisation of the Capitalisation activities (WP5) as well. The ToRs of the Mediterranea Ecotourism Consortium were reviewed and finalized by the partnership under the leadership, coordination and guidance by CPMR. A Policy Roadmap for Ecotourism in the Mediterranean was also drafted, also following a consultation process with partners, associated partners and other key stakeholders. The latter was presented and reviewed by the members of the Intermediterranean Commission during the second meeting of the MEC held on 25 May 2022 online. Both documents were widely presented at the advocacy conference and final project event held on 21 June in Rome. The development of regional action plans was undertaken by most regions. Finally, a good practice database was also finalized, with a questionnaire shared with all the MED regions (especially the IMC/IC member regions) in order to collect good practices in terms of integrated governance of the tourism and conservation departments.
