Natural resources in vulnerable MED tourist territories, such as islands and scarcely inhabited areas, are at stake. The carrying capacity of such MED destinations is often counterposing interests of tourist stakeholders and local communities. A joint response and a shared methodological framework to policy making are required in tackled territories, to seize the sustainability challenge, especially in terms of an improved and integrated sustainable tourism planning to preserve and valorise non-renewable resources.INCIRCLE will build up on previous projects, capitalising knowledge and available tools to test a new methodology that will apply the principles of circular economy to the tourism sector, with a focus on the peculiar needs of islands and low density areas. INCIRCLE tailored policies will address mobility, energy efficiency, use of limited resources as water and waste production, while enhancing community prosperity and quality of life.Durable and easily adaptable outputs are envisaged to provide MED decision makers with concrete tools and testing opportunities to improve their capacity in terms of assessing and planning sustainability in territories where resources are already scarce, to disclose new funding and concrete replication opportunities, establishing a critical mass for a MED sustainable and circular growth. Capitalization activities will replicate activities in further territories and mainstream results in regional, national and European policies.

Les ressources naturelles des territoires touristiques vulnérables MED, tels que les îles et les zones à faible densité, sont en jeu. La capacité d'accueil de ces destinations oppose les intérêts des acteurs touristiques à ceux des communautés locales. Une méthodologie concertée visant à l'élaboration des politiques est nécessaire pour assurer la durabilité dans ces zones, en termes d'une planification intégrée de tourisme durable, qui préserve et valorise les ressources non-renouvelables.En partant d’autres projets, INCIRCLE capitalise les connaissances et les outils disponibles pour tester une nouvelle méthodologie qui applique les principes de l'économie circulaire au tourisme, en posant l'accent sur les besoins propres aux îles et aux zones à faible densité. Les politiques conçues par INCIRCLE concernent mobilité, efficacité énergétique, gestion de l'eau et des déchets, en améliorant prospérité et qualité de vie des communautés.On envisage des résultats durables, faciles à adapter, pour fournir aux décideurs MED des outils concrets et testables, pour améliorer leur capacité d'évaluation et planification de la durabilité dans ceux zones aux ressources limitées, attirer d’autres financements et permettre une réplication concrète, promouvant une croissance durable et circulaire dans l’espace MED. Les activités de capitalisation visent à transferer les activités dans d'autres territoires, integrant les résultats dans les politiques régionales, nationales et européennes.

Achievements (EN):

A sound project management was ensured by project partners. Due to the pandemic, just on-line meetings among partners were held. For what concerns the steering of the project, four project meetings were organized during the fourth reporting period (2 SCM and 2 TBM), providing project partners with relevant information in terms of upcoming transferring and capitalizing activities. Additional WP4 and WP5-related operative meetings were held to support the smooth implementation of envisaged activities. Potential project risks were constantly assessed and monitored, while project partners contributions and actions regularly checked and evaluated. Contingency plans were designed to deal with the Covid pandemic and resulting delays and technical issues.The INCIRCLE Knowledge Platform was fed with new contents and enriched with the first set of documents to support the project replication process. Most local demonstrators were implemented and a first set of monitoring data provided. During the 4th reporting period all INCIRCLE strategies were elaborated and evaluated, according to the developed evaluation framework. The last round of SWG meeting was organised in Albania, Balearic Islands, Crete and Cyprus to, on the one side, present the strategy and seek stakeholders’ approval and, on the other one, to collect feedback and identify potential room for enhancement.Regarding ongoing transferring activities, the project replication package was finalised and made available in 10 languages (English, Italian, French, Slovenian, Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, Croatian, Greek, Albanian). An overall of 4 mainstreaming workshops were organised in partner territories to trigger strategies’ mainstreaming and funding. Regarding INCIRCLE communication, the booklet for tourists and local businesses were drafted, designed, translated and produced. In terms of project visibility, 11 presentations were held, while 5 articles and 271 posts were published. Towards the end of the reporting period, efforts were invested in the design of INCIRCLE study visit and final capitalisation conference.
