Read more Achievements (EN): European red wood ants Formica pratensis is mainly distributed in the cross-border areas of Turkey and Bulgaria, especially along the Strandzha mountains Bourgas and Kirklareli. Relatively large number of Lymantria dispar caterpillars (European Gypsy Moth, also called smokeless fire) heavily destroy the oak forests which is the main vegetation of Strandja mountains. European red wood ants are predators and good biological control agents on this destructive moth and therefore proliferation of ant nests provide significant contributions for forest health. On the other hand, the European red wood ants are under serious threat and may face extinction in the near future due to habitat fragmentation and other excessive human impact in the cross-border region. This species is mainly distributed in the cross-border areas (Stranjha mountains and its surroundings) representing zonal biological richness. As result of the joint studies was developed proposal for a conservation programme and action plan for protecting of the spieces which is expected to force public authorities in the cross-border area to take some measures to protect the species and also carry out specific collaborative conservation programmes in the region in the short run.
Turkish and Bulgarian experts scientists carried out joint field work and they shared technical information and experience. The project web site, promotional movie, press activities and joint training modules with the participation of relevant university departments, NGOs, locals and local authorities influence the whole cross-border territory and target groups from the respective areas. Also leaflets, communication tools, success book and face to face cotact with locals during the field studies provide additional contribution for the protection of European red wood ants, which bring significant cross-border impact on the biodivirsity state in the target regions. The project contributed to the partners expertise as well and upgraded their capacity to implement joint cross-border projects.

Delivered Outputs (EN): Indicator; Reached value; Comment
Number of capacity building / awareness activities related to nature protection, sustainable use and management of common natural resources;3.00;
1. The cross-border training (Activity 6) with 2 modules was held and increased the knowledge and skills of the participants; it built the capacity of experts, scientists, civil servants, etc., dealing with conservation issues.
2. Joint field and laboratory studies (Activities 1, 2, 4 and 5) also contibuted to building capacity because they enhance the competences of the academicals, scientists, experts & all stakeholders involved in nature conservation activities in the specific cross-border area.
3. Elaboration of popularization movie (Activity 7) - popularisation movie raised awareness also of the general public. Sources for verification: List of participants, photographs, agenda, presentation materials from the training modules; scientific reports from the field studies; popularisation movie, etc.
Number of people involved in training and capacity building activities in the field of nature protection;40.00;40 representatives of the target groups participated in the 2 modules of the joint training which increased their capacity and raised awareness on the importance of European red wood ants for biodiversity and ecosystems in the cross-border region.
Number of joint management plans/ coordinated specific conservation activities for protected areas;1.00;The target regions are part of protected areas in both countries (for Turkey - Igneada National park and Kasatura National park and in Bulgaria – Strandzha Nature Park) and project activities directly contributes to the conservation of European red wood ants and indirectly to preservation of the biodiversity. Scientific reports were developed by the joint scientific team of experts with proposals for action plan and conservation programme which will be used for further protection actions in the cross-border area. Source of verification: final scientific reports.
