In the Italian lagoons and in the Slovene highlands, the fishing and agro-pastoral activities have produced over millennia, unique types of wooden housing with also wooden infrastructures such as piers, moorings, piles and fences. The existence of these structures and of the related cultural background, however, is subject to constant maintenance. Maintenance is no longer economic sustainable in humid and coastal environments where wood degradation is massive and fast. As a consequence, in the last century impacting protection techniques and use of unsuitable materials had been adopted. The project aims to test some innovative techniques and products, developed by project partners to increase the durability of traditional wood species. Treated wood will be used in traditional buildings in socio-ecologically sensitive environments. This use will be economically and environmentally sustainable for the whole Alpine-Maritime Adriatic area. The environmental compatibility of these techniques will be evaluated in light of the most recent scientific knowledge within protocols among partners and will be transferable to the entire programme area.

Le attività di pesca e agro-pastorali hanno prodotto, nel corso di millenni, nelle Lagune italiane e negli altopiani sloveni tipologie abitative uniche nelle quali l’uso del legno è preponderante. Ad esse si associano infrastrutture lignee di servizio quali pontili, ormeggi, palificate e staccionate. La sussistenza di queste strutture e del bagaglio culturale ad esse associato è subordinata però ad una manutenzione costante non più economicamente sostenibile negli ambienti umidi e costieri dove la degradazione del legno è massiva e veloce. Per ovviare a ciò nell'ultimo secolo si è ricorso a tecniche di protezione impattanti o all'uso di materiali non idonei. Il progetto si propone quindi di testare alcune tecniche e prodotti innovativi, sviluppati e prodotti dai partner, che aumentano la durabilità delle specie legnose tradizionali. Il legno così trattato potrà essere usato nelle costruzioni tradizionali in ambienti Socio-ecologicamente sensibili, rendendone l’uso economicamente e ambientalmente sostenibile, all’interno del comprensorio alpino-marittimo Adriatico La compatibilità ambientale di queste tecniche sarà valutata alla luce delle più recenti conoscenze scientifiche oggetto di protocolli in uso sviluppati dai partner e trasferibili all’intera area di programma.

Ribolovne in agro-pastoralne dejavnosti so v tisočletjih nastajale v italijanskih lagunah in v slovenskih visokogorjih ,edinstvene tipologije stanovanj, v katerih prevladuje uporaba lesa. V zvezi s tem so povezane storitvene infrastrukture, kot so pomoli, privezi, piloti in ograje. Obstoj teh struktur in kulturne znanosti, ki je del njih, je podvrženo stalnemu vzdrževanju, ki ni več ekonomsko vzdržljiv predvsem v vlažnih in obalnih okoljih, kjer je degradacija lesa ogromna in hitra. Da bi bili temu kos, smo v zadnjem stoletju uporabljali zascitne tehnike, ki so naravi skodljive ali z uporabo neprimernih materialov. Namen projekta je zato preizkusiti nekatere inovativne tehnike in izdelke, ki so jih razvili in izdelali partnerji in ki povečujejo trajnost tradicionalnih vrst lesa. Tako obdelan les se bo lahko uporabljal v tradicionalnih konstrukcijah in infrastrukturah v socialno-ekoloških občutljivih okoljih, kar bo prispevalo gospodarski in okoljski vzdrznosti in trajnosti predvsem v Alpskem (EUSALP ) ter Jonsko Jadranskem obmocju (EUSAIR ). Okoljska vzdrznost teh tehnik bo evalvirana preko najnovejših znanstvenih spoznanj, ki so predmet uporabe protokolov, razvitih s strani partnerjev, in prenosljivi na celotno programsko območje.

Achievements (EN):

Overall Objective of the Project: The general objective is to give autochtonous softwoods and reeeds a durability suitable for making their use sustainable and compatible with the conservation of environment and with the safeguard of the Wood Cultural Heritage. In this way there will be a positive economic impact both direct (i.e.production and marketing of products) and indirect (i.e. promotion of fishing, agriculture, maritime transports and tourism). Project summary: Along the Italian lagoons and the Slovenian highlands, fishing and agro-pastoral activities have been conducted over millennia producing characteristic wooden housing with associated wooden infrastructures such as piers, moorings, piles and fences. The existence of these structures and of the related cultural background, however, is subject to constant care. Constant maintenance is no longer economically sustainable in humid and coastal environments where wood degradation is massive and fast. As a consequence, during the last century impacting protection techniques and use of unsuitable materials had been adopted. The project was therefore, aimed at testing some techniques and products for the wood protection which were developed and produced by the partners in order to increase the durability of traditional wood species, assessing at the same time potential toxic effects on the environment. In particular, the durability of differently treated wood samples and artifacts of native conifers and reeds when exposed to terrestrial and aquatic environments was evaluated trough standard tests and assessments. Furthermore, the environmental compatibility of the whole treatment set was evaluated through the application of a multi-step innovative ecotoxicological approach. Main results: The durability tests, conducted on materials and artifacts treated with the various formulations of the ®Silvanolin impregnating agent and subjected to some wood chemical-physical and thermical modification processes, have shown good resistance when exposed to the humid terrestrial environment, whereas criticality have been evidenced when exposed to underwater environments, with the exception of the acetylated ones. As far as the evaluation of the potential toxicity is concerned, among the tested treatments only the thermally modified wood and the impregnation with ®Silvanolin at low concentration were found to be suitable for being used in marine and freshwater environments.

L’obiettivo generale è conferire al legni di conifere autoctone e alle cannucce di palude una durabilità tale da renderne l'uso sostenibile e assolutamente compatibile con la conservazione dell’ambiente e con le esigenze del mantenimento del Wood cultural Heritage. In questo modo vi potrà essere una ricaduta economica sulle imprese sia diretta, legata alla produzione e commercializzazione dei prodotti, sia indiretta favorendo le attività di pesca, agricoltura, trasporti marittimi e turistiche.

Expected Results (SL):

Splošni cilje je avtohtonemu lesu in trsju zagotoviti željeno odpornost in s tem povezano življenjko dobo. To bo omogočilo večjo uporabo teh naravno obnovljivih materialov, kar bo v sozvočju s trajnostnimi pristopi in popolnoma združljivo z ohranjanjem okolja, kulturne krajine in potrebami po ohranjanju kulturne dediščine lesa. Na ta način so lahko med seboj povežejo gospodarske družbe, ki proizvajao rešitve za zaščito lesa in tiste ki takšen les uporabljajo. S trajnostno rabo teh proizvodov srbimo za tradiocionalne panoge v na teh območjih, kot so: kmetijstvo, pomorski promet in turizem.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The expected results are punctual although high interdisciplinary expertise is required to achieve them. On one hand, it is about giving new qualities to traditional materials to improve their performance and, on the other, to produce new materials through chemical modification of wood. Making wood or straw resistant to biological attack in wet environment, likewise exotic woods or plastics, opens up a considerable amount of possible applications and new market niches and businesses opportunities. The projects starts from the traditional use and the conservation of cultural heritage as important elements for the Upper Adriatic civilizations, taking up the environmental challenge to propose environmentally friendly products to be used in delicate environments. The use of biocides in the aquatic environment poses particular challenges as water dilates and conveys most of the traditional impregnating agents. Producing a product which binds to coniferous wood making it resistant to the aggression of aquatic organisms and at the same time not impacting on environment means offering fishermen and farmers, small house -builders and environmental engineers the possibility to continue using wood without turning to other materials, and obtaining it "at zero kilometer" directly from the Alps and the Karst. Getting Phragmites degrading very slowly means offering the possibility of returning to cover traditional houses, Casoni and Koce and Kozolci with reed roofs in sustainable way, recovering traditional professionalism and rare ancient activities which could still remain alive in some lagoon enclaves and in the Danube Delta.

Expected Outputs (IT):

I risultati attesi sono puntuali benché per il loro raggiungimento sia necessaria un'alta expertise interdisciplinare. Si tratta da una parte di conferire nuove qualità a materiali tradizionali per migliorarne le prestazioni e dall'altra di produrre nuovi materiali attraverso le modifiche chimiche del legno. Rendere un legno o una cannuccia resistente all'attacco biologico in ambiente umido in maniera comparabile a legni esotici o materie plastiche apre una quantità notevole di possibilità applicative e quindi nuove nicchie di mercato ed opportunità per le imprese. Noi ci siamo rivolti all'uso tradizionale e alla conservazione del patrimonio culturale in quanto elementi comuni e fondanti delle civiltà altoadriatiche, e abbiamo raccolto la sfida ambientale perché vogliamo proporre di prodotti rispettosi dell'ambiente e tali da poter essere usati in situazioni ambientali delicate. L'uso di biocidi in ambiente acquatico pone sfide particolari in quanto l'acqua dilava e veicola buona parte degli impregnanti tradizionali. Riuscire ad ottenere un prodotto che si lega al legno di conifera lo rende resistente e refrattario all'aggressione degli organismi acquatici, ma al contempo non impattante l'ambiente circostante significa offrire a pescatori ed agricoltori, piccoli imprenditori edili e ingegneri ambientali la possibilità di continuare ad usare il legno senza rivolgersi ad altri materiali, ed ottenendolo "a chilometro zero" direttamente dalle Alpi e dal Carso. Ottenere delle Phragmites che si degradano molto lentamente significa offrire la possibilità di tornare a ricoprire le case tradizionali, Casoni o Koce e Kozolci con tetti di canne in maniera assolutamente sostenibile recuperando professionalità e attività tradizionali che si stanno estinguendo e rimangono ancora vive in alcune enclavi lagunari e nel Delta del Danubio.

Pričakovani rezultati so jasno opisani. Za njihovo doseganje je potrebno široko interdisciplinarno znanje. Po eni strani gre za to, da se tradicionalnim materialom dodajo nove lastnosti za izboljšanje njihove učinkovitosti, po drugi strani pa se s kemičnimi spremembami lesa v bistvu proizvedejo novi materiali. Modifikacija, oziroma predelava lesa ali trsta v obliko proti biološkim napadom v vlažnem okolju jed eden od namenov projekta. Pridoblen material, bo imel lastnosti primerljive lastnostim tropskega lesa ali plastike, ob bistveno nižji obremenitvi okolja. S tem se odpira veliko možnosti uporabe, razvoja nove tržne niše in novih poslovnih priložnosti za podjetja. Osredotočili smo se na tradicionalno rabo in ohranjanje kulturne dediščine kot skupnih in temeljnih elementov zgornje jadranske civilizacije. Prevzeli smo okoljski izziv, ker želimo razviti izdelke in rešitve, ki spoštujejo okolje in se lahko uporabljajo tudi v občutljivih okoljskih razmerah. Uporaba biocidov v vodnem okolju predstavlja posebne izzive, saj velike količine vode omogočajo izpiranje aktivnih učinkovin iz lesa. Razvoj biocidnih rešitev, ki se dobro vežejo v les iglavcev, in je odporna na razkroj morskih škodljivcev, hkrati pa ne vpliva na okolje je izjemno zahteven proces. Ta rešitev pomeni, da ribičem in kmetom, malim gradbenim delavcem in okoljskim inženirjem omogočajo nadaljno uporabo lesa, in ne ustvarja potrebe po alternativnih materialih. Lesa je v ciljnem prostoru relativno dovolj. Transportne poti so kratke. Pridobivanje odpornega trstičja, ki se razgrajujejo zelo počasi, pomeni možnost da tradicionalne objekte, kopt so na primer Casoni ali Koce in Kozolci lahko ponovno prekrivamo s strehami iz trstičja, da se ohranja tradicionalno obrtniško znanje, ki izumira in je živo le še v nekaterih lagunah na Jadranu in v delti Donave.
