The common challenge of GreenHull project is solving the problem of pollution by cleaning biological fouling on hulls, thus mproving ships performance and decreasing the halogen species in the environment. The goal of the project is to improve environmental protection by developing innovative green technologies and solutions for cross-border management of dangerous water and waste. Direct effects are: 2 pilot innovative green technologies tested by companies for sampling and analyzing biological fouling on hulls during the ship cleaning (multi-sensorial and underwater robotic system, modular purification system). The Project results are useful for companies, research and training institutions, local communities and environmental politicy. Sea has no borders, therefore cross-border cooperation approach in the public and private sector is necessary in defining guidelines for the monitoring and management of dangerous water and waste and ensures a more effective crossborder management of water and waste. Innovative green technologies are unique solutions allowing further development of new cleaning technologies for dangerous water and waste.

La sfida comune del progetto GreenHull risolve il problema dell’inquinamento grazie alla pulizia dell’incrostazione biologica sugli scafi (IBSN), il che migliora le prestazioni delle navi e introduce meno specie allogene nell’ambiente. L’obiettivo del progetto è migliorare la tutela ambientale sviluppando tecnologie verdi innovative (ITV) e soluzioni per una gestione transfrontaliera (GT) delle acque e dei rifiuti pericolosi (IBSN) potenziando l’innovazione nell’economia verde e migliorando la GT delle acque e dei rifiuti. Gli effetti diretti sono: 2 ITV pilota, provate dalle aziende per la campionatura e l’analisi dell’IBSN durante la pulizia delle navi (sistema robotizzato multisensoriale e subacqueo, impianto di depurazione modulare). I risultati del progetto sono utili per aziende, istituzioni di ricerca e formazione, comunità locali e politica ambientale. Il mare non conosce confini, l’approccio della cooperazione transfrontaliera nel settore pubblico e privato è necessario nel definire le linee guida per il controllo, il monitoraggio e la gestione delle acque e dei rifiuti dell’IBSN e garantire una GT più efficace delle acque e dei rifiuti. Le ITV sono soluzioni uniche perché danno l’opportunità per l’ulteriore sviluppo di nuove tecnologie di pulizia dell’IBSN.

Skupni izziv projekta GreenHull rešuje problem onesnaženosti morja programskega območja iz naslova čiščenja biološke obrasti trupa ladij (BOTL), kar prispeva k boljši zmogljivosti plovil in manjšemu vnosu tujerodnih vrst v lokalno okolje. Splošni cilj projekta je izboljšati varstvo okolja z razvojem inovativnih zelenih tehnologij (IZT) in rešitev za učinkovitejše čezmejno upravljanje (ČU) voda in nevarnih odpadkov BOTL. Poglavitna sprememba stanja bo okrepljena inovativnost na področju zelenega gospodarstva in izboljšano ČU z vodami in nevarnimi odpadki BOTL na podlagi čezmejnih smernic. Neposredni učinki bodo: razviti in s strani podjetja pilotno preizkušeni 2 IZT za vzorčenje in analizo BOTL pri ekološkem čiščenju ladij (podvodno multisenzorsko robotsko plovilo, modularna čistilna naprava). Rezultati projekta bodo koristni za podjetja, raziskovalno-izobraževalne inštitucije, lokalne skupnosti in akterje okoljske politike. Morje ne pozna meja, zato je pristop čezmejnega sodelovanja v javnem in zasebnem sektorju pri opredelitvi smernic za nadzor, spremljanje in upravljanje voda in nevarnih odpadkov BOTL nujen za zagotavljanje učinkovitejšega ČU voda in morskih odpadkov. IZT predstavljata edinstveni rešitvi, saj ponujata možnosti za nadaljnji razvoj novih tehnologij čiščenja BOTL.

Achievements (EN):

One of the key priorities of the GreenHull project is cross-border cooperation, according to which we formed a consortium of 5 partners, 3 Slovenian and 2 Italian. On the Slovenian side, in addition to the Jozef Stefan International Postgraduate School, the National Institute of Biology, the Piran Marine Biological Station and the company Esotech from Velenje also participate. On the Italian side, we have involved CORILA from Venice and COMET from Pordenone. Luka Koper, Luka Trieste and ARPA FVG participate as associated partners. The project duration is 30 months and it will be completed at the end of August 2022. The total budget of the project is slightly less than 960,000 EUR. Numerous maritime routes in global and regional traffic harm the local environment in the Northern Adriatic. Shipping boats represent a risks to the environment due to the release of greenhouse gases and the accumulation of biological vegetation on ship hulls. In this way, alien species can be released into the local environment, some of which are invasive and could reduce local biodiversity. Furthermore, dangerous chemical substances from the antifouling coatings of ship hulls can also enter in the local environment. In GreenHull project we offer solutions for these problems by developing three prototypes of innovative green technologies for in-water cleaning of biofouling. We are developing a prototype of a remotely controlled underwater vehicle (ROV) with a cleaning attachment and a modular waste-water treatment device. In addition, we are also formulating guidelines for the development and use of these technologies in accordance with existing legislation in the field of marine water and waste management. The developed prototype technologies represent several advantages, which are listed in the presentation at DRIVE and contribute to achieving the goals of the European Green Deal. The technical specifications of the ROV together with the cleaning module are shown graphically in the video presentation on the website. In the cleaning unit, we use the cavitation effect to clean biofouling from the hull of ships. This method has proven to be the most effective even for underwater cleaning in niche areas. The cavitation process does not destroy hull coatings, but only removes particles of biofouling. The WiMo probe is one of the environmental sensors that is used to monitor and measure seven different seawater parameters before, during and after in-water cleaning of biofouling; this ensures that in-water hull cleaning is safe and environmentally friendly. The ROV with a cleaning assembly and a WiMo probe were presented to the public at the Venice Boat Show at the end of May 2022. In GreenHull, we also develop a prototype of a modular waste seawater treatment plant. Particles smaller than one millimeter are removed with mechanical cleaning; metal particles, such as copper and zinc, are removed with physical-chemical cleaning; particles smaller than 300 micrometers are removed with a sand filter; various microorganisms are removed with UV disinfection. In the implementation of the entire project, the aspect of national, European and international legislation is extremely important. For this purpose, together with the experts, we conducted numerous analyzes of legislative regulations and guidelines and came to the conclusion that this type of cleaning system with developed technology prototypes complies with all legal provisions.

Expected Results (EN):

The aim is to improve environmental protection by developing solutions and green technologies for effective cross-border management of marine waste water and hazardous waste generated by cleaning of biological fouling on hulls. In line with the specific objective of the Programme, 2 pilot green technologies will be developed, tested and applied to control, monitor and manage the waste due to the cleaning of the biological fouling on hulls, promoting the development of new economic opportunities in the Programme area and the conservation of the marine environment.

L'obiettivo è migliorare la tutela dell'ambiente sviluppando soluzioni e ITV per una gestione transfrontaliera efficace delle acque reflue marine e dei rifiuti pericolosi generati dalla pulizia dell’IBSN. In linea con l'OS di Programma, saranno sviluppate, testate e applicate 2 ITV pilota per controllare, monitorare e gestire i rifiuti dovuti alla pulizia dell’IBSN, favorendo lo sviluppo di nuove opportunità economiche nell’area Programma e la conservazione dell'ambiente marino.

Glavni skupni cilj je izboljšanje varstva okolja z razvojem IZT in rešitev za učinkovitejše čezmejno upravljanje odpadnih voda morskega okolja in nevarnih odpadkov, nastalih pri čiščenju BOTL. Skladno s programskim SP, bosta razviti, preizkušeni in pilotno uporabljeni IZT za nadzorovanje, spremljanje in upravljanje morskih odpadkov, nastalih pri čiščenju BOTL, kar bo pripomoglo k spodbujanju razvojnih gospodarskih možnosti programskega območja s hkratnim ohranjanjem morskega okolja.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main result of the project is a strengthened innovation in the control, monitoring and management of waste water and hazardous waste from cleaning of biological fouling on hulls (IBSN). This will be achieved through the development and optimization of experimentation with testing and demonstration, as well as the pilot use of ITV. The construction of two ITV is foreseen allowing the monitoring of underwater cleaning of incrustations and of waste water. Green technologies are an innovative solution to the dangers due to uncontrolled cleaning which can worsen water quality and marine organisms health. The project will contribute to reducing the risk of pollution due to hazardous waste through: cross-border guidelines and strategies to integrate legislation for the management of waste water and waste; cross-border collaboration to monitor environmental risks associated with hazardous waste and allochthonous species in the sea; development of a model of management system of waste due to ship cleaning, in line with national, EU and international legislation. The mentioned documents and the new green technologies will allow ships to be cleaned on a scientific basis and in line with environmental legislation, reducing the risk of contamination. Demonstrations to companies and pilot applications of new green technologies are also foreseen to increase the competitiveness of the area. The project will contribute to both indicators of the Priority Axis, i.e. it will increase the level of green technologies tested and performed and contribute to increasing the cross-border application of green technologies and processes.

Expected Outputs (IT):

Il principale risultato di progetto è una rafforzata innovatività nel controllo, monitoraggio e gestione delle acque reflue e dei rifiuti pericolosi provenienti dalla pulizia dell’IBSN in mare con lo sviluppo e l’ottimizzazione della sperimentazione con la prova e la dimostrazione, nonché l’utilizzo pilota di ITV. Si prevede la realizzazione di due ITV che consentiranno il monitoraggio e il controllo della pulizia subacquea delle incrostazioni e delle acque di scarto dovute alla pulizia. Le tecnologie verdi sono una soluzione innovativa ai pericoli legati alla pulizia incontrollata che può peggiorare la qualità dell’acqua e la salute degli organismi marini. Il progetto contribuirà a ridurre il rischio d’inquinamento a causa dei rifiuti pericolosi con: la predisposizione di linee guida e strategie transfrontaliere a integrazione della legislazione per la gestione delle acque reflue e dei rifiuti; l’avvio della collaborazione transfrontaliera di monitoraggio dei rischi ambientali connessi all’inquinamento del mare con rifiuti pericolosi e specie alloctone e con lo sviluppo di un modello di sistema di gestione dei rifiuti dovuti alla pulizia delle navi, in linea con la legislazione nazionale, comunitaria e internazionale. I predetti elaborati e le nuove ITV consentiranno di effettuare la pulizia delle navi su basi scientifiche e in linea con la legislazione ambientale, riducendo il rischio di contaminazione dell'ambiente transfrontaliero. Si prevede inoltre la dimostrazione alle aziende e l'applicazione pilota delle nuove tecnologie verdi, contribuendo così ad aumentare la competitività dell’area, data l’assenza di una simile tecnologia sul mercato dell'APR. In base a quanto sopra descritto, il progetto contribuirà ad entrambi gli indicatori degli effetti diretti dell’Obiettivo Specifico dell’Asse prioritario, e precisamente accrescerà il livello delle ITV provate ed eseguite e contribuità ad aumentare l’applicazione transfrontaliera di tecnologie e processi verdi.

Poglavitni rezultat projekta je okrepljena inovativnost na področju nadzorovanja, spremljanja in upravljanja odpadnih voda in nevarnih odpadkov iz naslova čiščenja BOTL v morju na podlagi razvoja in optimiziranja razvoja s preizkušanjem ter demonstracijo in pilotno uporabo IZT. Projekt predvideva izdelavo dveh inovativnih zelenih tehnologij, ki bosta omogočali spremljanje in nadzor ekološkega podvodnega čiščenja ladijske biološke obrasti in odpadne vode, nastale pri procesu tovrstnega čiščenja. Zeleni tehnologiji predstavljata inovativno rešitev za nevarnost nenadzorovanega čiščenja, ki lahko pomembno poslabša kvaliteto morske vode in zdravje morskih organizmov. Projekt bo prispeval k zmanjšanju tveganj onesnaženosti morja z nevarnimi odpadki s: pripravo čezmejnih smernic in strategij v dopolnitev zakonodaje na področju upravljanja z odpadnimi vodami in odpadkov; vzpostavitvijo čezmejnega sodelovanja pri spremljanju okoljskih tveganj onesnaženosti morskih voda z nevarnimi odpadki in tujerodnimi vrstami ter modela sistema upravljanja odpadkov pri tovrstnem čiščenju skladno z nacionalno, evropsko in mednarodno zakonodajo. Omenjeni prispevki bodo skupaj z novima zelenima tehnologijama zagotovili podlago za strokovno podvodno čiščenje ladij, ki bo v skladu z okoljsko zakonodajo, kar bo posledično zmanjšalo možnosti kontaminacije lokalnega čezmejnega okolja. Projekt, poleg že navedenega, predvideva demonstracijo podjetjem in pilotno uporabo novih zelenih tehnologij, kar bo po drugi strani zaradi pomanjkanja oz. odsotnosti tovrstne tehnologije na trgu PRO pripomoglo k povečanju konkurenčnosti območja. Na podlagi opisanega bo projekt prispeval k obema kazalnikoma neposrednih učinkov specifičnega cilja izbrane Prioritetne osi, in sicer bo povečal stopnjo preizkušenih in izvedenih inovativnih zelenih tehnologij in prispeval k povečanju stopnje čezmejne uporabe zelenih tehnologij in postopkov.
