Description (EN): Frequent dry periods of drought and high temperatures cause environmental stress with reduction of the quantities of water. For this reason, indicators of water consumption will increase affecting the natural and agricultural ecosystems (in particular on sectors with a high "water use index" such as viticulture). The cross-border area is vulnerable due to its climatic, geomorphological and economic (small companies) eatures. Strategies for sustainable water use must be defined as soon as possible. The project will create a network for monitoring the quantity / quality of water and develop green and innovative irrigation systems for vineyards (irrigation time compared to water stress). It will introduce also the rapid method to define the water stress of plants with hyperspectral aerial shots. Fast information will be guaranteed through the web portal. By optimizing the use of water for irrigation, economic situation of farms will be improved and sustainable consumption of ground water encouraged. With the new water consumption approaches and development of green economy, the competitiveness of this vulnerable area will be improved through participation of at least 15 crossborder farms.
Read more Description (IT): I periodi di siccità frequenti ed elevate temperature provocano stress ambientale e ciò provoca la riduzione delle quantità di acqua. Per tale motivo gli indicatori dei consumi di acqua aumenteranno. Ciò influirà sugli ecosistemi naturali ed agricoli (in particolare su settori con un elevato "indice di sfruttamento idrico" come viticoltura). L’area transfrontaliera è vulnerabile vista le caratteristiche climatiche, geomorfologiche ed economiche (piccole aziende ). È necessario delineare delle strategie per l'utilizzo dell'acqua quanto prima. Creeremo una rete per il monitoraggio della quantità/qualità dell'acqua e svilupperemo anche dei sistemi d’irrigazione verdi e innovativi per i vigneti (tempo di irrigazione rispetto allo stress idrico). Introduciamo anche il metodo rapido per definire lo stress idrico delle piante con riprese iperspettrali aeree. L'informazione rapida verrà garantita con il portale web. Con l'ottimizzazione dell'uso dell'acqua per l'irrigazione miglioreremo la situazione economica delle aziende agricole e influiremo sul consumo sostenibile delle acqua di falda. Con i nuovi approcci di consumo dell'acqua parteciperanno almeno 15 aziende agricole transfrontaliere. Con lo sviluppo della green economy miglioreremo la competitività di quest’area vulnerabile.
Read more Description (SL): Pogosta sušna obdobja in visoke temperature povzročajo okoljski stres, ki se kaže v zmanjševanju razpoložljivih količin vode. Iz tega razloga se bodo indikatorji rabe vode v prihodnjem obdobju povečali. To bo vplivalo na naravne in kmetijske ekosisteme (zlasti na sektorje z visokim »Indeksom izkoriščanja vode« kot je vinogradništvo). Obravnavano čezmejno območje je zaradi podnebnih, geomorfoloških in ekonomskih značilnosti (majhne kmetije) zelo ranljivo. Zato želimo na tem področju čim prej postaviti jasne strategije za učinkovito rabo vode. Postavili mrežo za spremljanje količine/kakovosti vode in razvili inovativne zelene namakalne sisteme za vinograde (čas namakanja glede na vodni stres). V projektu vpeljujemo hitro metodo za določanje vodnega stresa rastlin preko hiperspektralnih posnetkov iz zraka. Hitro informiranje deležnikov bo zagotovljeno preko spletnega portala. Z optimizacijo rabe vode za namakanje bomo izboljšali ekonomsko stanje kmetij in vplivali na trajnostno rabo podzemnih voda. V uvajanju novih pristopov rabe vode bo vključenih najmanj 15 čezmejnih kmetij. Z razvojem zelenega gospodarstva (“green economy”) bomo izboljšali konkurenčnost tega ranljivega območja.

The Acquavitis project aimed to develop and test innovative technologies and guidelines for the protection and efficient use of water resources and for contingency planning in the event of unforeseen events and climate change. The exchange of experience between research institutions, the testing of new technologies and the transfer of knowledge will help wine-growing farms to manage water sustainably and rationally in viticulture. In different work streams, researchers and specialists from different fields contributed their knowledge and experience to reach important results and conclusions.
Project summary:
Climate change, reflected in increasingly frequent droughts and high temperatures, is increasing environmental stress, which affects both natural and agricultural ecosystems (especially sectors with a high "water exploitation index") such as viticulture. The cross-border area of Primorska and Friuli Venezia Giulia, more specifically the Vipava Valley, the Karst, Brda and Friuli Venezia, with its geological-geomorphological and socio-economic characteristics (small agricultural holdings), has become particularly vulnerable. The more frequent hot and dry summers occurring in the last decade (2012, 2015, 2018 and 2022) have shown the vulnerability of both forest and agro-productive systems to extreme and abnormal weather conditions. Recent drought conditions have deviated significantly from normal. According to the European Drought Observatory, almost half (47%) of Europe is facing a soil water deficit. Low water levels in rivers, lakes and reservoirs are causing concerns for both irrigation water and drinking water supplies. Rapid climate change leading to rainfall scarcity, above-average air temperatures (above 35 °C) and increased evaporation highlight the urgent need to develop strategies to build resilience and resilience to these changes.
The project has therefore developed Acquavitis, a digital platform that allows monitoring of the main agrometeorological parameters and better management of vineyards. The online platform aims to store, process and visualise data in different ways, encouraging small and medium-sized wine-growing enterprises to adopt innovative approaches and technologies for correct water use.
The new tools, know-how and experience developed within the project will make it easier to adapt to extreme weather events, which will become more frequent in the future.

Read more Expected Outputs (EN): The project aims to contribute to sustainable agriculture through better management of water resources by adjusting the quantity, method and time of irrigation according to the real needs of the vine. This goal will be achieved through a holistic approach.
(1) Setting up the web: the Acquavitis portal will be the union of different scientific fields such as viticulture, plant physiology, meteorology, hydrology, geology, etc. The objective is the systemic collection/processing/connection of data from different sources and the transfer of information to farmers for the management of the vineyards. The interactive 3D model will show the impact of climate change on the state of vineyards.
(2) Implementation of new methods for measuring the water stress of plants: the quantity and modality through which plants access water will be assessed by measuring the water potential of leaves and the isotopic composition of plants. These data will be compared with the isotopic composition of water from various sources (rainwater, surface water, subsoil). The origin and quantity of water the vines obtain at any given moment will be assessed. The highlights of the analysis will allow the implementation of water circulation models. The state of water stress in the vineyards will be monitored by regular measurements of the water stress in at least six vineyards through hyperspectral and IR cameras with the aid of drones and airplanes.
(3) Development of irrigation systems and definition of effective irrigation: drip irrigation devices will be studied in two cross-border vineyards. Guidelines for irrigation procedures will be drafted.
(4) Knowledge transfer: data will be collected on the online platform, where farmers, students and researchers will be directly informed and disseminated during the events.
Read more Expected Outputs (IT): Il progetto ha l'obiettivo di rendere l'agricoltura sostenibile attraverso una migliore gestione delle risorse idriche. Ottimizzeremo l'uso dell'acqua regolando la quantità, il metodo e il tempo di irrigazione in base ai reali bisogni della vite. Questo obiettivo sarà raggiunto attraverso un approccio olistico.
(1) Impostazione del web: Il portale Acquavitis sarà il punto di unione tra campi scientifici diversi come la viticoltura, la fisiologia delle piante, la meteorologia, l'idrologia, la geologia, ecc. Gli obiettivi sono la raccolta sistemica, l'elaborazione e il collegamento di dati provenienti da varie fonti e il rapido trasferimento di informazioni agli agricoltori per la gestione dei vigneti. Il modello interattivo 3D mostrerà l'impatto dei cambiamenti climatici sullo stato dei vigneti.
(2) Introduzione di nuovi metodi per la misurazione dello stress idrico delle piante: la quantità e la modalità attraverso le quali le piante accedono all'acqua saranno valutate misurando il potenziale idrico delle foglie e la composizione isotopica delle piante. Questi dati saranno confrontati con la composizione isotopica dell'acqua proveniente da varie fonti (acqua piovana, superficiale, sottosuolo). Così valuteremo l'origine e la quantità dell'acqua che la vite ottiene in un dato momento. I risultati raccolti consentiranno la produzione di modelli di circolazione dell'acqua. Lo stato di stress idrico nei vigneti sarà monitorato mediante misurazioni regolari dello stress idrico in almeno sei vigneti attraverso camera iperspettrale e IR con l'ausilio di droni e aereo.
(3) Elaborazione dei sistemi di irrigazione e definizione di un'irrigazione efficace: i dispositivi di irrigazione a goccia saranno studiati in due vigneti transfrontalieri. In questo modo stabiliremo le linee guida per le procedure di irrigazione.
(4) Trasferimento della conoscenza: i dati saranno raccolti sulla piattaforma online, ove agricoltori, studenti e ricercatori saranno informati direttamente e diffusi in occasione deglii eventi.
Read more Expected Outputs (SL): V predlaganem projektu bomo vplivali na trajnostno kmetijstvo preko boljšega upravljanja z vodnimi viri. Optimizirali bomo rabo vode, tako da bomo prilagodili količino, način in čas namakanja dejanskim potrebam trte. To bomo dosegli s holističnim pristopom.
(1)Postavitev spletnega portala: Spletni portal Acquavitis bo povezoval znanstvena področja, kot so vinogradništvo, rastlinska fiziologija, meteorologija, hidrologija, geologija...Cilji so sistemsko zbiranje, obdelava in povezava podatkov iz različnih virov ter hiter prenos informacij kmetom za upravljanje vinogradov. 3D interaktivna maketa bo prikazovala vpliv klimatskih sprememb na stanje vinogradov.
(2) Vpeljava novih pristopov v merjenju vodnega stresa rastlin Količino in dostopnost vode rastlinam bomo ocenili preko merjenja vodnega potenciala in izotopske sestave vode v listih. Le-to bomo primerjali z izotopsko sestavo voda iz različnih virov (deževnica, površinske, podzemne). Tako bomo ocenili, iz katerega vira in koliko vode trta dobiva v danem trenutku. Zbrani rezultati bodo omogočili izdelavo modelov kroženja vode. Stanje vodnega stresa v vinogradih bomo spremljali z rednimi meritvami vodnega stresa v najmanj šestih vinogradih ter preko hiperspektralnih in IR posnetkov z droni in letalom.
(3) Preučitev namakalnih sistemov in postavitev smernic učinkovitega namakanja: Naprave s kapljičnim namakanjem bodo preučevane v dveh čezmejnih vinogradih. Na ta način bomo postavili smernice namakalnih postopkov.
(4) Prenos znanja: Podatki bodo zbrani na spletni platformi, kmetje, študenti, raziskovalci bodo z rezultati seznanjeni neposredno ter posredovani na dogodkih.
