The MoNa aims to record-analyze-evaluate the protection and promotion of natural resources and cultural heritage across the Balkan-Mediterranean territory choosing as a main subject the integrated planning and the common management strategies in environments of high interest and preservation value (Natura 2000, Ramsar areas etc.) in interdependence with regions with a high cultural importance (UNESCO protected areas etc.). Its goal is to develop common tools and management practices; therefore, it is expected to add value to the participating regions which are considered at national level as places of high natural and cultural interest (Santorini/Greece, Nessebar/Bulgaria, Bultrint/Albania, Kykkos Forest/Cyprus) but also to other regions of natural and cultural heritage that are affected either by local/multi-level pressures or by climate change. The co-existence of some very special – with international character– natural and cultural resources which are though disturbed and affected by human and natural pressures, is an issue that the MoNa project aims to approach so as to strengthen the capacities of the relevant actors for an -ecosystem based- development approach promoting efficient use, reduction of pressure and also integrated protection and valorization of natural resources and cultural heritage. This is the special innovative element of the MoNa project. The partnership is composed of different and important actors, responsible for the management, protection and promotion of the specific environmental and cultural sites in order to jointly develop an innovative pilot project which shall examine the links between natural and cultural heritage through a new testing and certification process: the “Brand for the promotion and protection of natural and cultural environment”, as an integrated, innovative approach. The principles and the criteria for the inclusion of sites in the category of the new brand which combines both valuable environmental and cultural characteristics will be discussed in 4 thematic workshops, held in the participating countries whereas the final decisions will be taken in the closing conference, in which decision makers from the min. of environment and culture of the involved countries will participate. Both the workshops and the conference are expected to help reinforce and specify the EU and the national policies on issues pertaining to environmental, cultural, regional development and research and mostly on the application of innovations in this field. During the implementation period, a variety of activities will be undertaken by all partners that will focus on the protection of the environment, the enhancement of its particular characteristics, the protection of cultural heritage preserved in sites of peculiar environmental interest, the distribution of all the information that will be produced regarding both the environmental and cultural heritage.

Expected Results (EN):

ΜοΝΑ connects effectively the Balkan space (Bulgaria and Albania) with the Mediterranean space (Greece, Cyprus) through regions with important contribution in the valorisation of transnational natural resources and cultural heritage in both land and sea. The proposed measures of integrated management that MoNa proposes will concern: - Santorini (2nd best island in world and 1st in Europe for 2016 according to recent measurement) receives approximately 2,000,000 visitors per year and has already submitted a request to become protected site of UNESCO and part of the island is under NATURA 2000 (GR2420003). - Butrint is protected site of UNESCO and a RAMSAR site. - The old city of Nessebar is also UNESCO protected area and NATURA 2000 (BG0000574). - The forest of Pafos where the Kykkou Monastery lies is NATURA 2000 (SPA & SCI) and the Monastery itself is pursuing to be included as a whole area –along the forest) in the UNESCO protected sites. The successful implementation of the MoNa project can create an international database which will contribute effectively to the efforts of the selected areas to manage with credibility and sustainably the cultural and natural treasures they possess. Additionally, they will be able to test jointly ways of mitigating the negative effects derived from the high visitors’ traffic and managing their carrying capacity. Finally, they will be able to feed with codified information, evaluating both the positive and negative effects, dozens of other respective areas in Southeast Europe with common characteristics.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main outputs which are directly associated with the project main outputs: A. Measurable open to the public outcomes that will contribute to the visitor’s capacity of sites such as: Digital Platform / Social Media actions/Information materials (in 3 languages)/4 Technical meetings - workshops /4 pilot actions (see maturity) Integrated Territorial Approach for common policies: Implementing and animating sustainable cooperation systems between the authorities in charge of the management and the update of strategies and solutions. - Awareness actions. - Storytelling activities for multiple target groups: A special short story addressed to teenagers will be printed, through which an effort will be taken to raise awareness of youth on the environmental and cultural heritage. The story will be illuminated and accompanied with relevant material (educational, literary and digital) on the four sites of the project. Information campaigns, training activities and promotion activities, open to all. - Conference (without fee): “Monuments in Nature. A creative co-existence”, Athens. - Global Edition: A book with all the documentation, maps with the sites, proposed itineraries and photos for the four sites of the project,free of charge. C. Surface area of habitats supported in order to attain a better conservation status. - (4) mini scale investments. - Habitat mapping for the promotion of biodiversity conservation in Nessebar, Butruit, Santorini (3 studies). D. Designated areas addressed (of which Natura 2000 sites). - In Santorini 6,5Km coastal zone, Pafos forest 823 Ha.
