The project wants to diminish the burden of informal carers of people living with dementia by professional and structural support of the informal carers and the use of tailor-made technological solutions. The project aims to strengthen the resilience and perseverance of the informal carers so that people living with dementia can stay at home longer. The informal carer will be acknowledged as main actor of an effective and integrated service to PLWD.

Achievements (EN):

The MONUMENT project aimed to support and unburden the informal carers of People Living With Dementia (PLWD) as much as possible. Partner organisations in Belgium, France, UK and the Netherlands worked together to create dementia-friendly spaces where PLWD and their informal carers can go for information, leisure activities, or simply a coffee. The aim is for them to feel at ease and as much as possible ‘unburdened’. 5 Odense locations across the 4 regions were set up, bringing insight in different settings and approaches to cross-border cooperation, ranging from urban to rural to outdoor spaces. All 5 locations are recorded in a VR tour for PLWD, their carers and anyone interested in the concept. The project also gave the opportunity to look into technology and how it can support the informal carers and PLWD. 3 pillars were developed to support this. Firstly, the website MEMO by MONUMENT was created in all 4 regions with region-specific information on dementia for the informal carers and PLWD. This includes sharing interesting books, dementia-friendly activities, testimonials, tips and last but not least: all reports of this project for interested policy makers and organisations. Secondly, all Odense house regions created demonstration sessions with already existing assistive technologies to unburden the informal carer and gave back some autonomy to PLWD. By doing this, the technology was introduced in a non-invasive way into the lives of the PLWD and their informal carers. Thirdly, the project created the opportunity to look into the needs for a technological solution that isn't on the market yet. After various sessions with the target group, a prototype of a remote monitoring software was created. The software is compatible to most wearable devices and allows informal carers and occasionally other involved people (such as volunteers from the Odense house or hairdressers) to keep track of the location of the PLWD. This software has been made open source available for developers. All project findings and impact studies have been gathered in the socio-economic feasibility study, providing a solid basis to build upon for future Odense houses. Complementary to that, factsheets of each Odense house together with the VR-tour offer a good understanding of the different approaches. Delivered Outputs (EN):

MONUMENT focused on the specific task and wellbeing of informal carers for PLWD. Most services are aimed at supporting professional care providers and at PLWD. The existing support to informal carers is very generic and not specifically focused on the heavy mental and psychosocial burden of informal carers for PLWD. This project explored better support for informal carers of PLWD in particular, which directly leads to better service to PLWD. MONUMENT based its approach on the Dutch Odense Houses and enriches this meeting venue with a technological testing ground and demonstrations. Technology providers will get in contact with informal carers, assistive technologies can be experienced in an accessible way and optimised based on feedback from end users. Co-creation labs are organized together with technology providers for new applications to arise from real needs. The project’s outputs are: ● 5 Pilots in 5 separate sites offering support to informal carers of PLWD based on the Odense concept, consolidating and structuring early information, support and recreation. ● A digital platform by and for informal carers of PLWD, consolidating information on dementia friendly services, and enhancing exchange with peers. ● A Service centre adapted to the needs of PLWD and their informal carers (LP) in Mechelen. This is an Odense house which has been fully renovated to the needs of the PLWD and informal carers. ● A Site adapted to improve the use by PLWD and their informal carers, including improvements to signage. This is Reed Barn at Peckover House (UK). Improvements to the space allow for people living with dementia, their families and carers, to share experiences, gain new skills and take a break from caring responsibilities. ● 10 demos making existing assistive technology (at TRL9) accessible in an experiential manner, enabling timely introduction and adaptation to the needs of carers. ● Tests co-creating remote monitoring technologies (at TRL7) in operational environment tailored to the specific needs of informal carers of PLWD. ● A Socio-economic feasibility study on the MONUMENT Odense model for policy makers and guidance for solution actors.
